Suchat Pornchaiwiseskul, Department of Employment Director-General

More than half a million Thais claimed jobless benefits in June, the Department of Employment reported today (June 30).

“The number of people who claimed jobless benefits in June was 505,594,” department director-general Suchat Pornchaiwiseskul said. “However, some workers may be hired for work again after the government eased its lockdown.”

Suchat also said that of that figure, 140,496 claimed benefits via the department's website, a drop when compared to the 166,009 in May, 267,351 in April and 144,861 in March.

He said that under the Labour minister’s orders, the department has instructed officials to monitor the situation closely and provide information about jobless benefits that can be claimed within 30 days after people lose their jobs.

“Those who were laid off because employers closed their businesses due to the Covid-19 crisis are eligible to receive 70 per cent of 300 days of wages,” he said. “Meanwhile, people who quit work themselves are eligible to receive 45 per cent of 90 days of wages.”

For more information, people can contact any employment office nationwide or call the Labour Ministry hotline 1506 (press 2), Suchat added.

Only half a million???

I am getting the feeling that the reason Thailand has such great reserves is by deliberately not funding adequate social services and benefits to the needy !

With world demand set to fall for Thai goods during this pandemic and maybe not coming back if that demand goes out of business, there is little point in opening some work-places whether you lift restriction here or not
