Hundreds of scientists say coronavirus is airborne, ask WHO to revise recommendations: NYT

(Reuters) - Hundreds of scientists say there is evidence that novel coronavirus in smaller particles in the air can infect people and are calling for the World Health Organization to revise recommendations, the New York Times reported on Saturday.

The WHO has said the coronavirus disease spreads primarily from person to person through small droplets from the nose or mouth, which are expelled when a person with COVID-19 coughs, sneezes or speaks.

Rising coronavirus cases in 39 U.S. states cast a shadow over the nation's Fourth of July celebrations as health experts worried that holiday parties will cause a further spike in infections that could overwhelm hospitals. Freddie Joyner has more.

In an open letter to the agency, which the researchers plan to publish in a scientific journal next week, 239 scientists in 32 countries outlined the evidence showing smaller particles can infect people, the NYT said https://nyti.ms/2VIxp67.

The WHO did not immediately respond to a request for comment from Reuters.

Whether carried by large droplets that zoom through the air after a sneeze, or by much smaller exhaled droplets that may glide the length of a room, the coronavirus is borne through air and can infect people when inhaled, the scientists said, according to the NYT.

However, the health agency said the evidence for the virus being airborne was not convincing, according to the NYT.

"Especially in the last couple of months, we have been stating several times that we consider airborne transmission as possible but certainly not supported by solid or even clear evidence," Dr. Benedetta Allegranzi, the WHO's technical lead of infection prevention and control, was quoted as saying by the NYT.

Yes, we can learn so much from New York, where they bungled COVID-19 more than any place on the planet. Yep, that makes lots of sense.

Yup that’s were lots of international flights land yup then it spiked yup then with competent leadership following recommended safety protocols got a Handle on it and achieved good results hey but don’t worry trump says it’s 99% nothing lol

Competent leadership does not lead to a jurisdiction being the worse hot spot of COVID-19 on the planet. But thanks for a good laugh.

The whole world is screwed if people do not take personal responsibility and take care of themselves in order to take care of others.

Out of the 2 post above you seem to be very unaware of the news related to learning. Already at an early stage of the pandemic it was informed of that the virus can spread through air for about 10-20 meters in small droplets. In other words, they learned nothing new. They just want 15 minutes of fame by repeating what´s already known. No news at all.

Nearly impossible to send a statement of unity and cohesion in densely populated areas where masks may be necessary, when the same groups in control have spent millions and millions on purpose driven division and disinformation campaigns.

agghh those experts WHO knows what nonsense theyll be spouting next!they did tell us masks wernt needed then changed the story.its a respiratory disease so its common sense to wear a mask.but as weve seen so far experts and sense very rarely meet in the middle. ask the thai that formed all these regs for people to return to meet their families or who have the correct docs or the genius of dr ferguson in uk along with the NHS who sent thousands of infected patients back to OAP homes with out testing them.resulting in the deaths of thousands. well if it was me id be charged with negligent homicide but the NHS we just clap.

It seems to me we are fresh out of *scientists* and *experts*, but have a plentiful supply of political activists and propagandists.

That was a result of poor political choices, not scientists doing their best to figure this thing out. Pathetic that you'd attack the very people who are doing their best to help all of us. Shame on you! ????

New York got hit early and  so there was a lot more unknown. But we have learned a lot from what NY got right and what it got wrong. New York learned its lessons. Its coronavirus transmission is way, way down. Lessons that Florida, Texas, Arizona, Georgia, California and many other states failed to learn. Which is why they have had to reverse their policies. And the President of the United States hosted an indoor rally in Arizona with 3000 people where virtually no one wore masks.

Western countries should leave their ego behind and mask up like the (south)east. Or are they worried about a serious loss of face?

With new technology now producing two colors, maybe not a good idea to be using the word "FAKE", but, easy enough to google.

People who ignore that covid 19 is an airborne virus, are not logical. Until narcissist Trump and his sycophants lead the way by appearing on TV wearing a mask, it will continue.

As for the UK - well to encourage binge drinking and congregations of customers at pubs is another matter that is not logical.  I sense that behind Boris' back door, together with that Cummings C**T, the herd immunity experiment is back in place. With the majority (c.70%) of infected people only having mild symptoms, and building antibodies, like Boris, only 30% of the population will risk death.

That's only around 20 million people.

There are scanning micrscopes that do this. And the point of the colorization is not to fool anybody, it just to make the structure of the virus clearer. In other words to aid in understanding. You have a problem with that?

It is called novel corona virus for good reasons. Experts are learning more each day and contributing to the wealth of information to fight the pandemic. The rest is up to leadership sadly missing in US.

And your diversions are getting soooo tiresome. Do I really have to explain to you what scientists do? Is that the level you're at Craxy Alex?

Did you notice that the scare tactics aren't talking about deaths, but rather only giving reports of new cases?  Who cares about cases, what matters is how many healthy people are dying from this?  If you are not healthy, lock yourself down.  Don't force healthy people to succumb to your unhealthy lifestyle.

^^^ This needs repeating. If you're out and about wear a mask. It's not about you, it's about everyone else you may come into contact with while you're out.

Personally, I don't know how I would live with myself if I should discover in the future that I was responsible for unknowingly giving someone the coronavirus... isn't it better to err on the side of caution?
