Visiting team led by US Army chief not to be quarantined

A delegation led by the United States’ Army chief of staff won’t be quarantined at state facilities as they are "not a Covid-19 risk group" but will be required to wear face masks during talks with the prime minister, the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration (CCSA) said.

CCSA spokesman Dr Taweesin Visanuyothin said there were six reasons why the group, led by Army chief General James McConville, won’t need to be quarantined – they are from a “high-ranked organisation”, not more than 10 persons (9), travelled for a short distance, screened for the virus in the last country they departed, accompanied by public health officials and travelled in private vehicles.

“The visit is related to delicate international ties and Thailand must welcome its guests,” Taweesin said. “We have exchanged [Covid-19] information with the US and they understand.”

General McConville is to meet Thai Army chief General Apirat Kongsompong and Prime Minister Prayut Cha-o-cha on July 9 and 10.

He and his group will be the first foreign guests to visit the country after it went into lockdown amid the Covid-19 pandemic.

He met with Thailand’s RTA Combat Team in Hawaii on July 5 and discussed improvements in manoeuvres under the Lightning Forge 2020 exercise and Covid-19 preventive measures.

If I recall my history correctly, it was a widespread outbreak in the US Army that was the major precursor of the Spanish flu of 1918.  Lightning couldn't strike twice though surely?

The US military reported 3422 NEW Cases of Covid yesterday June 6 alone. That is just the military. How is that not a high risk group? We all made our sacrifices for months then they <deleted> it all away for a photo Op?

According to history, I understood that the Spanish flu started in the Boston USN Yard in September, 1918, discovered by one Lt. Cdr. Paul Lewis USN, (Medical officer)?

"The great Influenza" John M Barry. Penguin Group, NY.

(Regardless, please do not inform Trump, or he might now decide to call it, "American' flu" or "A-meri-flu" or something...….)

...one has VIP status, is a "somebody", or is filthy rich.

These people are deemed Covid-free as dirty viruses only infect commoners.

How nice not to have to show a "certificate of health" and $100,000 US medical insurance on entering the country.

Just by the way, but what are Thai military supposed to be training for when they take a little holiday in Hawaii to learn how to fire a gun?  Is there some external threat facing Thailand or is it just that Thai democracy needs to be...erm.... "protected" against home-grown saboteurs?

Not one set of balls in this whole government to tell them 'No'.

There is a high likelihood that there will be cross infections, and these Thai soldiers will return to their homes and infect families. ????

For once, 'Thai Army' - stand up for yourselves and your people.

I suggest we all self-quarantine during their visit and up to two weeks once they leave.

MY god stop spreading lies ,it was found in France and Spain , , 1st WW soldier brought it from there to  Kansas

Probably a Thai Government ploy, If the Covid returns, they can back the Chinese, and say the Americans brought it in.

Did you notice China is being aggressive , No go back to your coma

Does anyone believe that if a Thai delegation went to the States they could avoid whatever measures other travellers do? No. Sorry. The US doesn't do reciprocity (except for Saudis and Israelis of course).

Why does it have to be either. Both can stay out.

Really? ???? you need to expand what you are listening and reading.............

Of course they won't be quarantined.

Nobody was quarantined during the bird flu. Nobody was quarantined during the mad cow disease, nobody is quarantined during the flu twice a year. Nobody gets quarantined with lower back pain. Why would you quarantine someone because another form of virus is present, that causes temporary respiratory issues.

You're right. They reckon the first was a duck farmer who joined up and went to a boot camp along with a few thouand others. From there it went global.

2nd wave had a more lethal mutation.

Lightning strikes the Empire State building 23 times a year on average.

And stop calling me Shirley

If they are traveling I bet they have been tested weekly.  So what's the big deal.

As a minimum Thailand government should insist on it's own covid 19 test that requires only a 1-2 day wait for results.

Assuming the US military was actually tested immediately before entering Thailand, when and with what test type and lab brand was used? Senior White House officials and Secret Service have been infected despite allegedly stringent measures taken in the White House.

As it is Thailand should insist also on social distancing.
