WHO sets up panel to review handling of COVID-19 pandemic

GENEVA (Reuters) - The World Health Organization (WHO) said on Thursday that it was setting up an independent panel to review its handling of the COVID-19 pandemic and the response by governments.

The announcement follows strong criticism by U.S. President Donald Trump's administration, which accused the WHO of being "China-centric", and U.S. formal notification on Tuesday that it was withdrawing from the U.N. agency in a year's time.

Former New Zealand Prime Minister Helen Clark and former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf have agreed to head the panel and chose its members, WHO Director-General Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus told a virtual meeting with representatives of WHO's 194 member states, which was webcast.

"This is not a standard report that ticks a box and is then put on a shelf to gather dust. This is something we take seriously," Tedros said, adding that the panel would provide an interim report to an annual meeting of health ministers being reconvened in November.

Clark, addressing the meeting, said that the assignment "could only be described as exceptionally challenging".

Tedros noted that in May, WHO's member states adopted unanimously a resolution put forward by the European Union calling for an evaluation of the global response to the pandemic.

More than 12 million people have been reported to be infected by the novel coronavirus globally and 548,429 have died, according to a Reuters tally.

Oh China will be pleased. What a complete farce, this is not an independent panel at all. Ok ex NZ PM Helen Clark but the former Liberian President Ellen Johnson Sirleaf..........na.

She just got appointed by Tedros in May 2019. "Her Excellency Ellen Johnson Sirleaf appointed as WHO Goodwill Ambassador for Health Workforce"

Of course he knew her before then when he the Health Minister for Ethiopia. Also China has some large investments in Liberia of course.

well lets see what a soap opera that is

Donald might get a lot of stuff wrong but he is 100% correct when it comes to the joke WHO, the whole thing needs to be wiped out and start again, there are experts involved that are likely very embarrassed at being part of such a political organisation but I guess they are paid enough to keep their mouths shut

Or Trump may be talking B.S. as usual.

There are not only US experts at the WHO. The US is part of the executive board, same as India, Germany, Japan, UK, Australia, etc....

Look at the composition of the executive board. They are all nominated by their respective countries and are usually also employed by their national health organisation, not by Tedros. It does not look like a nest of China's friends, right?

Unprecedented situation .... heroic staff performed well .... some lessons have been learned .... more diversity encouraged ... wise leadership met challenges well ... procedures updated to better face future challenges ... please send $30 billion. /ENDS

Any representatives from belt and road countries being put forth to review?

Guaranteed China is going to be behind who gets to say what.

This is a real eye opening timeline of the situation in China and how they basically screwed the world over by award winning journalist Simone Gao.

There's enough material here to keep conspiracy theorists fully occupied for the next ten years, it's the best thing since the moon landing.

So a hand-picked communist panel will review actions of a communist-led agency, funded by a communist country.

Sounds about right...

What about the review panel to see where Covid came from etc. Headed to China this week to discuss the methodology etc with Chinese experts who are providing them with initial research data to save them the trouble.

The review on response by governments will be embarrassing for US. Good spin expected from his supporters.
