(Reuters) - Fleetwood Mac guitarist and co-founder of the influential rock group Peter Green has died at age 73, the Associated Press reported on Saturday, citing a statement from Green's lawyers.

The law firm Swan Turton said in a statement that Green had died in his sleep this weekend, AP reported. The firm did not immediately return Reuters' request for comment.

Green, born in London, was one of original four members of the band founded in 1967 and was one of eight members to be inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 1998.

Tributes from Green's British rock peers and admiring fans poured in on Twitter on Saturday, remembering him as one of the most talented guitarists of his generation.

"An Artist I Truly Loved & Admired…He Was A Breathtaking Singer, Guitarist & Composer," tweeted British rock band Whitesnake singer David Coverdale.

"God bless the ineffable Peter Green, one of the unsung heroes of musical integrity, innovation and spirit," British singer-songwriter Cat Stevens tweeted.

Green left the band in 1970, around the time he was using psychedelic drugs and struggling with schizophrenia, according to Fleetwood Mac's website.

His talent and unique tone on the guitar inspired legendary blues artist B.B. King to say, "He has the sweetest tone I ever heard; he was the only one who gave me the cold sweats," the band's website states.

Such a sad loss, one of my all time favourite songs 'Need Your Love So Bad,' one of the greatest guitarists of all time, better than Clapton IMO (sorry).

Saw him at the Irish Club in Leeds with his new band Peter Greens Splinter Group, sadly his magic had gone with all the drugs he had taken. RIP

I did not know that he wrote "Black Magic Woman"!

RIP.

LSD could cause schizophrenia, but I read it could help PTSD for many

I better post that link before ....

Peter Green a true  legend!!!What a player! He passed on his famous guitar to Gary Moore who also really

knew how to make it sing.

Kirk Hammett of Metallica owns it now,i don't know if he plays it.He payed two million dollars for it.

I believe Peter sold it to Gary for 200 dollars because he said that is what he paid for it.

A lot of truly great musicians have passed away but luckily their music will

go on!

One of my faves.

The story back when, before there was internet things, was a bit too much with the hallucinogens and then some sort of religious group took advantage of his mental state.  When I saw the movie "Still Crazy" I thought the messed-up member of the band was based on him.

A phenomenally talented guitarist who's lovely work has graced so much music I enjoy. RIP

oh well

Peter Green, RIP

Peter Green was the guitarist on John Mayall's "Hard Road" album, which I feel was Mayall's best.

I guess these things aren't fully chronicled, but back in the golden age of progressive rock (when people had better things to do than chronicle ????) Peter Green was one of the noted gunslingers (guitarists) of the moment along with Hendrix, Clapton, Beck, et al.  There were a bunch of others who faded in popularity for some reason or other.  Of course it's all different now with social media, instant news, etc, but back then there were just a few publications worldwide to keep you informed of these things, and even then some of it was just gossip overheard in the clubs, groupie chatter, etc.  Supposedly it was gossip that broke up Beck's band in 1969.

I'm writing this out because not long ago I was speaking with a young fellow and telling him about Green, and at the mention of Fleetwood Mac I got the eye-rolling thing and that ended the conversation.

I wonder what his career would have looked like had he stuck to playing hardcore blues. Maybe less successful in acclaim and money but possibly longer and more productive.
