Does A Thai Girl Enjoy Reading?

Recommended Posts

what is your experiences?

does a (probably less educated) thai girl/bargirl enjoy reading your messages (email, postal letter, whatever)?

will she really understand what you write her (if written in foreign language)?

what is the average maximum lengh of transcript you (should) send to her?

will she collapse if she "has" to read (and understand) - say - more than one A4-format  size of text?

(I know, I know - no need to mention now that she will get bored as soon as she is no longer interested in your words... :o)

will she appreciate you sending her a message in thai instead of any foreign blabla?

I'd say that any letters or e-mails that you receive from this girl should give you a rough idea of of what size of letter she likes to read.

As for her being a bargirl I don't really see what difference this makes, if she speaks English she'll read it, if she doesn't she'll get someone else to read it to her. Enjoyment of reading is an individual thing, I don't think you can generalise on reading habits by education level, nationality, occupation or sex.

If you want me to have a look at the letter you wrote her, you can Pm me anytime but I would give you just MY OWN IDEA of the letter whether as a girl I like it or not... ofcourse you cannot apply my likeness to your friend since we might have a different mentality.

I think you're seeing things in my post that weren't there, or perhaps were there but not intended to be the main point. I would agree Farang who associate with bargirls don't need to be put down.

The point was that I thought the following quotes were looking down on Thai people. Re-reading everything though I have to admit this was likely not the intention of the original poster, who asked a question based on his personal situation and didn't attempt to establish something about Thais in general. But let me post the quotes anyway:

> does a (probably less educated) thai girl/bargirl enjoy reading

> letters/emails

>On the whole, Thais don't read and seem to be more comfortable

>communicating orally.

>My own view has always been that Thais dislike the black-and-white tone

>of written communication which frequently leaves them little wiggle room

>for claiming later that they misunderstood you.

>I think Thais like to do things off the seat of their pants a lot, without

>consideration for research.

That was all. :o

Cheers,

Chanchao

One of these quotes is mine, "I think Thais like to do things off the seat of their

pants a lot, without consideration for research." I don't mean this in a condescending

way at all, in fact sometimes timing is everything and a quick decision based on instinct can make all the difference in a situation.

As Clint Eastwood once said when directing a movie,

"Let's not think this thing to death, let's just do it."

Or as Eli Wallech said in "The Good, The Bad & The Ugly"..."if you're going to shoot, shoot...don't talk about it!"

As an earlier poster said re. his wife only reading Thairath, mine too. Aside from Thai cookbooks which she studies to the nth degree! :o

My Thai wife reads the Thai Rath (Wrath?) newspaper, lottery listings, and those

soft core porn mags that have those erotic stories in them. It gets her all horned up

before we go to 'bed.' I think she has good taste in reading.

My wife was a teacher when we met. She stopped and became a housewife when we wed. She has been reading the same 2 or 3 Thai novels since - 6 years. She takes an on-off approach. She reads a few pages and then puts it down until she 'feels like it' again. She has also been reading a couple of English language books and has the same attitude.

She is educated and intelligent, she just can always find something more interesting to do (in her mind) than read for the sake of it.

I read a lot. Our 4 year old goes to a private western school - she reads a new book every week (about 20 words a page and 30 pages long). She enjoys reading.

I just wonder if it is the western schools that instill us with the desire to read. I'd like to know form the Thai girls D80, LC, Cathe etc if they are encouraged to read books at school other than text books.

It is a well known fact that Thais read a lot less than most other asian nations. However, I notice that my wife loves to read english novels/classics that have been translated into Thai.

She often is surprised that the "stories" are really good!!

Jane Austen can do that to you I guess.
