Labour agency earmarks Bt4.8m to provide part-time jobs for 230 laid-off workers

The Department of Labour Protection and Welfare is spending more than Bt4.8 million to provide part-time jobs for 230 workers who have lost their jobs due to the Covid-19 fallout.

 

Apinya Sujarittanan, the department’s director general, said this is in line with the Cabinet’s resolution in March to use the national budget to mitigate the impact of the outbreak.

 

“According to data collected from October 1, 2019 to July 31 this year, 4,599 businesses have sought to suspend operations temporarily, which in turn has affected 919,410 workers,” he said.

 

“In line with the government’s policy to mitigate the outbreak’s impact, the department has created a project to provide part-time jobs so people who have been laid off can continue earning and take care of their family.”

 

He said his department will hire 230 people, 40 of whom will work in the capital and the remaining 190 in the provinces. He added that this project will cost Bt4.83 million.

 

“The department will employ them for two months – August and September – for a monthly wage of Bt10,500,” he said. “These people will work on publicising the department’s missions and operations, provide advice to employers and employees on their legal rights and duties, as well as survey venues where people have been laid-off.”

Am I understanding this in the right way? Is the Labour Office looking after their owns, and not the people they are paid to look after, at the same time that the state contribute with money for such a thing?

230 jobs for 919,410 people ? Boy that will help, after they sought through the near 4000 applications per post !
