Illegal Microsoft Xp ?

Luckydog

Recommended Posts

It was already installed when I bought this PC and it works well enough.

But I responded to a suggestion that I allow the latest Updates the other day. Result?

I was informed that I was using a non Kosher XP and my Computer went mad!

So I wonder whether Microsoft knowing that my XP was illegal sent something nasty?

I know it wasn't a virus.

Anyway, thanks to good old System Restore I eventually got back on track.

So, may I suggest Gents that you do not respond to urgent suggestions that you get some nice automatic updates from Microsoft.

Just incase my troubles were not a coincidence.......

You can do manual update by downloading them and then install on your PC.

What I am surprised of is that you can buy the THAI verion for just 180 Baht or something at Lotus.

While the English version is something like 8000 or more.

Microsoft pop-up says "there are updates ready for your computer".

Wording other than that suggests you responded to a spam or some other malware.

I have XP that is not legal, installed it instead of legal XP that came as OEM with my PC and never seen Microsoft going after me.

Even if they could recognize that the same license number was used several times, Microsoft would not go to destroy your system. If anything at all, decline the updates.

Microsoft send out an update called 'Genuine advantage' on a regular basis. If you install this you'll be notified that you've got an illegal copy of windows running every time you boot up - but nothing other than that should happen. As was said in a previous post, system restore to the last service date will remove the update.

Best to buy a genuine copy, or contact Microsoft Thailand and pay on line to validate your exsisting copy.

Setup up your XP to notify you of the updates without installing. After getting the notification of new updates available, peruse the list and choose the ones that you want and then download and install them manually.

Two things that I always think are the minimum pieces of software that should be 100% legal - the Operating System and the Virus protection software. The two things that your computer can't do without, and therefore the two things you really don't want to suddenly crash on you.

These bootleg copies are OK for awhile, if you are carefull what you are downloading from the internet, etc. The problem is that they cannot be updated via microsoft update system. Microsoft offers updates, usually monthly that are often security fixes. Without these updates, you could be more likely to get hacked, highjacked & corrupted with a virus. A supposed genuine XP install CD was available where I live in Issan for about 4000 bht. 10,000 bht is way over the top, unless you are getting some additional software thrown in.

This happened to my computer as well..after getting " genuine (dis) advantage"...with pop-ups...it totally crashed.....and i personally know two others to whom it has happened......I tried to re install XP....and failed...so reverted to windoze 2000....but even with a firewall, i kept getting huge amounts of adware....

I finally took the advice of a mate, and tried linux....ubuntu....

It has been a steep learning curve.....but well worth it....my computer now runs beautifully...

The system is FREE....and updates are FREE....and so is help and advice....

it doesn't seem like your computer were crashing because u had as illegal copy of windows, it looked like u just had spyware that automatically installed and it "owned" your computer by having massive pop-ups causing your processor to work over it's limit and crashed.

i think simplest way to avoid, malicious spywars and adwares to attack your computer is steer clear from pornographic sites :o and when warned to update while you are online from something that just pops up from no where, don't click ok! sometimes those update boxes looks very authentic and can fool you. but like someone said, it's best to do everything manually and select and know what you are installing. google is a good way to search what u are installing into your system.

This brings up an interesting case of notebooks sold in Thailand. Cheaper ones <40,000thb usually don't come with real Windows, seller will do fake for free though, more expensive ones do. (There is no extra price, only better notebook.) Why is this? Does this happen globally?

A non-genuine copy of Windows XP will be completely fine.

It will be updated to Service Pack 2 (SP2) and that's when the updates become practically obsolete anyway.

That is complete BS. There have been several serious vulnerabilities patched since then, including the WMF issue which was probably the most serious security issue with Windows since it was released. It's not good to give advice when you don't know what you are talking about.

I use AVG antivirus also, i still can't believe such a quality antivirus is totally free!

It's crap. Look at the lab results, and do a search of the computing forum for all the AVG users who needed help with infections, and the amount who tried something else and found a ton of nasties that AVG had not informed them about. Not the case with Antivir (also free) or nod32.

I finally took the advice of a mate, and tried linux....ubuntu....

You certainly won't be having problems with viruses or validation now. :o

Avast makes a good scanner for Linux that you can use to make sure you don't pass on any infected files to Windows computers. Costs nothing.

bought a new laptop from Pantip. Not a cheap one I might add. Got back to hotel and used free wifi to get updates. What do you know Pop ups telling me my copy is a fake. OK a bit pissed off but not a big deal. I clicked on the resolve it now button, Although how they have the nerve to call it that beats me. I paid 6000 baht to liscence my copy. All I got was an email saying my disc would be sent to me and would take 4 weeks to arrive due to huge demand. I did recieve a disc but to date still no product key. Its now been 6 weeks and all I get off Microsoft is the run around. I will be returning to BKK and will be getting my self an Applemac. Bill can go and F%$k himself from now on. Even when you get people like myself who want to do the right thing you get treated like scum. As said NO MORE.

A lot of people get ripped off by dishonest shops in Thailand (and much of Asia for that matter), that's why the Cleanshop program exists.

Although you have a good solution as it's pretty hard to get a fake Mac.

Grab Parallels when you do and you can run XP within a window on OSX. If you ever get your product key.

You should have been emailed the product key. Send them a reminder that you have not recieved it. I went through this process for a friend & got emailed the product key long before I got the disc. I have heard there are some fake Macs around also, but probably not as common. I would but it from a bone fide Apple dealer, not some "fly-by-night" kiosk.

I would actually login and do the authentication right at the shop before handing over the payment after seeing what I have seen here. Takes five minutes and if they aren't willing to let you then you don't give them any money.

I have 2 pc's and a laptop. The main PC and the laptop have genuine copies of Windows XP and the 2nd Pc has a fake copy. My local PC shop is selling genuine Windows XP for 6,000 Baht and I wanted to buy one, but he told me it's not worth it!! (Who am I to argue?)

Anyhow, I've just Googled for windows updates for my fake copy and on all the updates there is a message that I can only download if I am running genuine Microsoft Windows.

So can you tell me how I can get and download the updates without buying the real thing?

Thanks :o

Amazing coinsidence.

A friend of mine just bought a PC from one of the bigger stores in Pantip Plaza.

He bought it 3 days ago.

A HP Pavillion Desktop.

We set it up together when he came back, and went online.

Then the warning came from Microsoft.

The XP was not genuin, and a certificate of autentication (for the software) was requested.

I asked him where the product CD was, and he had none.

Nothing came with the computer.

Then he told me that the PC got a software installation in another shop in Pantip before he went home with all the boxes.

The computer is sealed, and he has the receipt.

I wonder, do they really sell HP Pavillion computers with no software installed?

Technically no, they sell it with FreeDOS installed. You can boot to a DOS prompt but no much to do from there. Acer sell many of there laptops with versions of Linux to cut the price.

This is a price sensitive market , manufacturers want to shave costs and Windows has become more expensive as a proportion of the price of a new computer over the years.

Vendors are supposed to push you for an OEM copy of Win XP or Vista when you make a purchase. Of course there's more profit to be made by them installing a pirate copy and charging you a fee for it.

He paid 37 000 for the PC.

I would believe this should have included all.

I have a Asus laptop (Dual Boot) running two "illegal windows xp" operating systems. I set up my my windows to notify me of the updates without installing them.

The way you do that is

1. right click on my computer

2. choose properties

3. click on the automatic updates tab

4. choose notify me but don't automatically download or install them

When updates become available, you will see a small message on the bottom right of your screen, when you click on that, it allows you to look at each update and choose which ones you wish to install.

Don't install anything that says Microsoft Genuine Advantage.

That way you get all the updates without the annoying messages related to having a copied windows xp.

It's pretty easy, my computer gets all the updates without the hassles or the cost of a genuine operating system.

I will give Microsoft my money when they can come up with something that is 100 percent secure and stable, which will not happen in the near future.

You'd probably come up with an excuse to steal that too :o

If you really mean that BS excuse you just made, give your money to Apple then.
