Pattaya's silver lining from the pandemic: People enjoying a beautiful clean sea

Thai media Sophon Cable TV said on Facebook that the Covid-19 crisis has been disastrous for Pattaya economically.

But the pandemic has had a great side effect - the sea is now actually clean.

They said that Thai families were gleefully playing in the pristine waters.

Waters that were once black and murky and a beach that was full of rubbish are now inviting.

They said that massive tourism in recent years brought trash and pollution with it. This took many forms such as tourists themselves tossing rubbish, tourist vehicles spewing pollution into the air and filthy water from tourist operators discharging sewage out into the sea.

This is now over at least for now and the beach vendors are getting happier.

One told the media that there were not many visitors during the week but at the weekends there were plenty of Thais and their families.

Now that the beach and the sea is clean they want to see the authorities sort out long standing parking problems.

Wow, it must have cleaned up spectacularly since I was there last week then, as it was murky to say the least.

Pity the local government couldn't get the sewage treatment plants working :shock1:

I was in Pattaya on Saturday. It was really quiet....lots of closed hotels, restaurants and bars. This was Beach Road at about 2pm.

You cannot be serious...put a photo of some freshly drawn seawater in a clear glass for us all to judge..

Yes. The beach is so pleasant now without the riff raff, especially mainland Chinese.

I feel bad for the people who are out of work, but man life here is sooooooo much better now!

No wonder that the water quality is better now. Most of the dirty Farangs are gone. ????

How about -

They said that massive domestic tourism in recent months brought trash and pollution with it. This took many forms such as Thais themselves tossing rubbish, Thai vehicles spewing pollution into the air and filthy water from Thai hotels discharging sewage out into the sea.

I wouldn't set foot in the sea here but the improvement in the air quality is unbelievable, one of the biggest positives of the current situation. It makes you realise how much pollution is being pumped out when the town is fully operational.

The water might look clean but all the sewerage from Pattaya is released into the sea by the plant just next to the start of walking street. I haven't seen any upgrades to that plant in the last 25 years in spite of all the extra hotels and condos.

Back in another world I used to design Sewage Treatment plants, for Binnie & Ptnrs (later Thames Water) in London and Camp Dresser & McKee in Boston, U.S.A. and unless I am very much mistaken this structure is merely a Bar Rack Screen and Pumping Station, supposedly to convey raw sewage to a remote Treatment Plant. You are right though, in that this is the main discharge point for untreated sewage ????

And all the girls are virgins to complete this rosey picture of happiness  ????

Ofcourse it's cleaner. All those hundreds of boats roaming outside is just tipping over all garbage at night. Why?

Well if beach road is dirty then tourists want to go to islands.

That means more job for the boats right.....

You're absolutely correct...it wasn't taken recently. According to Tineye Image Search....this photo first appeared on 20 October 2017. But hey....they only lied by a few years.

Think most of us with thai family relations know everything comes from the 7/11 and big C rather than pay a beach vendor

No. But don't worry, we ain't gon' let this stand. Members of the venerable PPPC (Pattaya Proctological Photography Club) will be along soon with the usual pics of trash & turds.

Must have been all those dirty foreigners bathing in the sea that made it dirty before.

Not the antiquated, broken down inadequate water management services or the black water that gets pumped out every now & then?

have they moved the sewer outfalls ??

Just now, 3NUMBAS said:

Have they installed any in Wongamat?

The city still has lots of residents pooping every day and the sewage treatment plants probably don't work better than they used to.

Just because one can't see it ( as much ) it doesn't mean the water is safe.

beach vendors wouldn't give a flying #uck about cleanliness if there are no farangs.. They rather walk through raw sewage as long as they make money
