Unicef reminds Thailand of young people’s right to safety, freedom of expression

Concerned about the potential harm young people may be facing amid the ongoing protests in Thailand, Unicef is calling on all parties to uphold protesters’ right to freedom of expression and protect them from all forms of violence and intimidation.

 

The UN agency said young people’s rights to participation, peaceful assembly and freedom of expression, including peaceful protest, are enshrined in the Convention on the Rights of the Child (CRC), the most widely ratified human rights treaty in the world.

 

Thailand ratified the CRC in 1992 and committed itself to guaranteeing that young people's rights are fulfilled, including their right to participation, expressing their opinions in a peaceful manner and for their voices to be heard.

 

Unicef has also said that all schools and learning institutions should be safe havens for children, where they can constructively voice their opinions and their ideas be acknowledged. Schools and educational institutions should also provide a safe space for students to exchange ideas and engage in meaningful discussions, where they can build their communication and negotiation skills, and contribute to finding peaceful solutions to challenges they face.

 

Any child who comes in contact with the law must receive timely support and undergo appropriate juvenile proceedings, without the use of violence, intimidation or threats.

Some upsetting videos of teachers verbally abusing and physically punishing children for doing the three finger salute, etc. doing the rounds on Twitter.

 

The genie is most definitely out of the bottle. People are fed up of eating s*** and being forced into saying it's delicious. There's one video of a teacher telling the kids that Prayut saved Thailand from corruption. No one's buying it.

Will Thai security forces take any notice? Not unless Thai government acquiesces to demands by Thai youth on a matter we are forbidden to mention.

Sadly, discussion and critical thinking is not encouraged in the Thai education system! Students, whether in school or University are "taught" by learning by rote and what the teacher says is right without question, no debate!  Teachers and lecturers would do well to read the CRC and allow students to express themselves freely!

We are living in a different state now with Covid with most countries and citizens under immense pressure both socially and economically, mostly never experienced before in their lifetime. There will be little tolerance now by the people if the Junta attempt to flex their muscles over the protests. Just turn to Belarus and Lebanon. The people have had enough and with no end in close sight with covid and potentially a second wave and possibly worse to come for some areas. The landscape is changing.

Well done Unicef for reminding Thailand to follow basic rules af humanity!!! 

 

As more the political and social situation in Thailand becomes known to the rest of the world, as better! Shootings of children in 2020 would create a far heavier outry in the civilized world as it was the case after the shootings of farmers in 2010. 

 

On the other hand and despite this good remider of Unicef, the Thai staff at the UN are quite a selected lot, of course. Not different to other appointed figures in this country. I remember in mid of 2014, when I flew in bizclass from Istanbul to Bangkok, I was sitting next to a quite good looking Thai woman. After half an hour, however, I stopped to communicate with her. She was one of the appointees of Thailand at the UN. God was this chicken democracy-hostile, yellow and arrogant! Disgusting.

This time it would be streamed live though. Which means either usurpers have to go 100% CCP or call it quits, as there will be sanctions from the west.

If someone (many people could be) was live streaming soldiers firing into a crowd of unarmed people, that would be game over for the junta. Like the earlier poster said; they'd have to go full CCP. And to paraphrase Robert Downey Junior in Tropic Thunder, "you never go full CCP". 

 

These young Thais are incredibly tech savvy, organised, but most importantly, determined. I imagine once the soldiers roll in people will be told to take out their phones and record. Live stream it. Messages will be sent out in real time for anyone around to record whatever they can. This is a type of warfare, but wars aren't fought like they used to be. The students can easily adapt. The dinosaurs simply can't.

Then all that work to look like a democracy will be for nothing. Back to square one and no one even pretending to believe a word they say. 
 

As I said before, any footage of unarmed people being shot will be met with big consequences. And there would be footage. No way of smiling your way out of that and asking for patience.

You dont seem to understand why a fake election was held in the first place.

 

As someone else said,   if they do what you say then they will have to go full CCP and isolate themselves.  All the efforts to uphold the charade would be in vain.

Maybe Prayut forgot about that.... conveniently.

When arrest warrants are made and the students are in court facing a judge maybe they should remind the court about the ratification.

Because I am giving my opinion as to what might happen, don't think I support the government.

 

IMHO, there is not the support for a student style revolution; especially outside the active areas. And what countries would support an overthrow at this time? And, all the while, friendly China, would be encouraging a violent crack down.

 

I feel that the best Thailand can hope for is dissent from within.
