Using emergency decree to stop protests unwise: opposition

Sutin Klungsang

The opposition has warned the government against using the Covid-19 outbreak as an excuse to extend the state of emergency and control the ongoing anti-government protests.

Opposition chief whip Sutin Klungsang said the Centre for Covid-19 Situation Administration’s proposal to extend emergency had little to do with concern over public health as the situation in Thailand is getting better.

He said he believes it is a political strategy to stop protests, adding that putting the country under emergency will further affect the economy. The Office of National Economics and Social Development Council has already said that the gross domestic product stands at minus 12 per cent.

Sutin said the prime minister should listen to the protesters’ voices and try to solve problems instead of using the emergency decree, because it will only push the country to a point of no return.

Therein lies the dilemma .. those in power are not gifted with the attributes needed to engage on a level with the people required to untie this and will continue in the furrow they know best .. but trying to crush the Youth will not make the problems go away as those who have tried it before have discovered ..

The only way this will get better and resolve itself is if the unelected PM resigns and walks away with all his cronies in chase. This includes the false party who did not win the majority of the votes as well.. It is apparent there can be no mutual meeting in the middle with these self proclaimed elite and what they stand for as it is their way or silencing. This old era of their thinking is way past away and the new generation want to be their own light for their future, not what the dinosaurs want to hold on to.

They use SOE everyday because it gives then immunity against prosecution for whatever they do including unlawful arrest under section 116.
When needed they could use it for something very bad.

So the Emergency decree was extended yet again no surprise there.

Just wondering will it be extended indefinitely until COVID19 is eradicated?

What's the point of having a suitably repressive and one-size-fits-all emergency decree...if you're not going to use it?

Never fear, there will be another crisis that requires further extension of the emergency degree once COVID is gone.  Governments everywhere have their foot in the door and they are not going to take it out voluntarily.

I sense the <deleted> is approaching the phatlom !

Covid is a handy excuse for the usurpers. Just keep the hoi polloi scared <deleted>less of a virus that's barely worse than a flu and you can hammer the protests all you want.

The PM is the problem, and unless he's going to remove himself he is not going to listen to anyone, he will use the emergency decree in an underhand way by using other agencies to dissuade the students from protesting. The government will not directly tackle the issue but use every other dirty under-hand method at their disposal.
