BANGKOK, August 20 (TNA)- The Ministry of Tourism and Sports is finalising a plan to boost domestic tourism as international visitors are not likely to return for months.

Speaking at a seminar on Thursday, Anan Wongbenjarat, Director-General of the Department of Tourism, said that although Thailand was successful in controlling the outbreak of coronavirus, the country could not fully open its borders for international tourists until a COVID-19 vaccine was available.

The new plan to boost domestic tourism which would be introduced soon would focus on group tours for Thai tourists in Bangkok, Chiang Mai, Chon Buri and Phuket, he said.

This is pretty much like owning a restaurant that has no customers and encouraging your wife to eat there ... you are not really bringing in any new money.

Just tell the tour operators, the hotels, the guest houses, the restaurants, the bars etc etc to charge reasonable prices instead of trying to gouge everyone.

If the price is right people will come... and the government will not have to subsidise anything.

Are there any Thais left to go on holiday because yesterday they mentioned they will create jobs for 1 million Thais in the tourist sector.

The Thai's I know can't afford to stay at home so very interested to see this near finalized plan is it at sub-committee stage yet ????

It is a success if you take them up on what is free money. We just stayed at Chatrium Riverside 5 star in Bkk, 4 nights including breakfast and 4 evening meals with wine came to under 7k baht ???? They give you 40% off, up to 600 baht on meals and drink which goes up to a max of 900 baht a day Fri- Sun, daft not to take them up on it.

Sounds great, however most locals are too poor for that. Even you give them discounts. I do not even see much locals out on a saturday in CM lol, let alone they would travel.

And there it is.  In black and white.  No open borders until 'immunity passports' arrive.  Simple.
High season 2021.  Mandatory vaccination or no entry into the country.  And it will need to be "the correct and accepted" vaccine to boot.  Stay tuned!

And the long-stay expats who live here and who provide Thailand with a steady supply of new money are treated like house plants.
