Why Thailand number one again? And again?

Hmmmmm

Across the world, Thailand boasts the greatest percentage of women in senior management (45%)

The best!

Hi Yinn. First off, about that bashing you're right. This website is infested with Thailand bashing. But don't take it personally. They would do the same to any other country. It's just that these old-timers live here now which makes Thailand their first and easiest target.

As to your story. I think it would be best if you get a bit more perspective of things happening in the world. For starters Thailand has almost no tourism now. Some people indeed call that covid control. Many others think it's only a way to avoid having to deal with the virus all together. Any country can keep out the virus 100%. It's just that most other countries choose to have some covid so the economy is not getting hit as hard as is now the case in Thailand. You see, in many countries the people don't accept closed borders because of so many reasons. Europeans are traveling in the EU. Mind you there are lots of amazing places to visit in Europe. 'We' have everything, from beaches to forests to some of the highest mountains in the world. Cold and warm climates. It's quite amazing really. Thailand is getting more expensive and with the closed border now Thailand might very well feel the effects for many years. Notice the euro-baht rate.

In recent polls the majority of Thai people also want to open the borders but the government won't listen. High politicians and former army chiefs simply won't allow it. In terms of democracy and listening to its people Thailand has been far from number 1 for some years already.

There are so many other areas where Thailand lacks behind too. That's OK on itself. It's not criticism per se but it leaves lots of improvement for Thailand to achieve. Some suggestions:

- (much) better and safer roads plus training drivers

- clean tap water everywhere

- laws and regulations to lower pollution (ban those diesel trucks to start with)

- better primary education (proper math, science, history, language education in public schools)

- properly trained teachers (to help with the above)

- much less corruption

- free press

Look up lists about freedom of press, road fatalities, English proficiency, general well-being of the population, healthcare accessibility among others and you will find that Thailand does not score very high. Again that's OK. It's not OK when a country does not make progress and that is where Thailand is struggling now. There are so many Thai people ready to move their country forward. But it won't happen as long as there are people in power who won't allow it. I honestly hope this will change because if it doesn't then Thailand might actually start to regress and fall behind. Which is a pity because Thailand has huge potential.

Don't forget: tourists always have alternatives. Yes Thailand is great but it is not irreplaceable as a holiday destination nor as a country for foreign investments or retirement. But in the end this is all up to you and your people. The average visitor here is just a guest. We can makes suggestions but you're the one who has to call for improvements.

  • I suggest that US News attempt to start a small business in Thailand. Then run it for one year.

  • This is just so bizarre. First thing that jumps out is the 51% Thai owned part unless that's changed then not being able to own land, building etc, then immigration, police or military funds to pay in

Thailand probably also is the best country to lose a business without much hassle, i.e. when your obligatory local 51% majority share holder kicks you out unceremoniously as soon as the company begins

In fact, the more of them I look through the worse Thailand looks. Quite shocking in fact. Hard to find an international comparison where Thailand does well.

Yeah, I saw that one. It was one of the few that showed Thailand in a good light.

Nooooo! They are the best already. If it's broke, don't fix it! ????

This is nonsense.

The universally accepted global rankings for ease of doing business are done annually by the World Bank, using 10 different criteria.  The latest rankings have Thailand 21st overall (out of 190 countries) and 47th for starting a business.
