The top speed before was 140kph so if the specs 160kph is true..... quite a big gain??

Googling it every site lists the old one as 160kph.

Interesting.... they must have used hotter gasoline blink.gif Every one i have had, tops out at 140kph on the speedo. From what I see on TV from other posts all say 140 is it. (unless modded)

Hopefully the new one can get up to 160. Not that Id want do that too often on a bike of that size on Thai roads.

Me too.

But what top speeds are listed at on spec sheets, and what you can get them up to are often very different.

The top speed for the new and old one are both listed as 160kph though.

It sounds like exactly the same engine but FI, with bigger heavier wheels and tyres, a heavier pipe, and much nicer fairings. :D

Errr, I was with you up until the part about nicer fairings! ;)

Hummm, just wondering. The engine is the same size, but with a few "mods".

]brand new and special designed Keihin throttle body and piston pins have been made shorter, con-rods and short-skirt forged pistons made lighter, camshaft profiles made more aggressive and overall operating friction has been reduced.

The new Keihin throttle body is equipped with fine atomizing injectors and fuel mapping add finesse to the new 2011 Honda CBR150R.[/i]

Maybe the mods and f/i make it a little faster, with a slight increase in power, but then when you factor in the bigger, heavier wheels/tires & exhaust, does that negate the power increase over the previous version? Will it be faster than the old version, about the same, or even slightly slower?

After reading everything posted today, I'm starting to wonder if if might be better to just hold off for now and see if they come with a 250.

Decisions, decisions.

Deemon I am going to the Honda Party next Sat (30th) for the official release of the new bike (s) (hopefully also the 250) so will see first hand what they are like. I will try post Sat evening my views/thoughts of the bike.

I will try and be subjective but of course it will be my personal opinion so not nessacarily right for everyone. Be nice to get my bum on a seat and test ride, but I suspect that wont be possible. A few laps on the Hoonda track be nice!

It will depend on "if and when" the 250 is available whether I go for a 150 first. My Dealer told me Nov 10 for the 250...but untill I see I dont believe This is Thailand

Yeah....there's no way that the CBR 150i will hit 160. Perhaps it might indicate so rolling downhill a 45 kilo rider attached tucked in tighter than a bull's arse during fly season, but it won't be a real 160 even at that.

Whatcha mean? My speedo goes all the way up 220, so it must go that fast.

I think these max speeds are done with the bike in a lab, on a machine with no rider on it, with no wind etc etc.

Ummh, if it was done in the lab (assuming on a dyno), than what would it matter how much wind was passing over the bike? Since the bike would be spinning a drum and the sensors measuring the speed, shouldn't any wind only work to the favour of the bike by keeping it cool and perhaps forming a sort of 'ram-air' effect?

Maybe a little OT but i am looking for a K&N air filter for the CBR150. Second hand or new, maybe somebody here can help. Thanks in advance

Unless the wheel is spokeless, surely wind would slow it down. But besides the point.

Has anyone ever had a bike that actually went to the top speed as on the spec sheet?

This 'new' ones nothing more than the old one, with a few slight engine mods, virtually the same engine output, and a heavier body, and much heavier overall weight.

The (supposed) specs say max torque 17 N-m @ 8500, and max power 19.5 hp @ 10500. But 17 N-m @8500 comes out at 20.3 hp! So power at @ max torque is higher than max power ---- a contradiction in terms. I think this casts doubt on all the figures.

Methinks some one is playing "think of a number".

Incidentally, at18.6hp and 128kg wet for the old one, and the quoted 19.5hp and 138kg wet for the new, the new one has 4.8% more power and 7.8% more weight. This is progress?

As for the looks ---- the old one (imho) is slim, purposeful with clean lines, the new one is anything but. And as for those indicator stalks......!

Welcome to the thread, 13! Nicely put post and I feel exactly as you do about the performance data and the aesthetics.

. And as for those indicator stalks......!

Those indicator stalks unfortunately are demanded by Euro specs........, so we get to have to live with them. Imagine how long they will last in a crowded bike stand!!

I think after market suface mounted ones would be a good investrment.

I dont know why they dont make the rear mirror flashes like the cars have nowdays. Higher and much easier to see. Only thing is Im not sure of, if the flashing glare may be a problem at night?? (although of course facing away from u)

I have a set going on my re-furbished bike, be mobile in a week I hope, so will be interesting to see how they go.

Now go and apply your thinking to the old model cbr-or any other bike or car that you can find data on and see if max torque and max power are at the same rpm and then check if the maximum torque quoted equates to the maximum power quoted .

There is a reason why practically all vehicles don't have the same maximum torque output at the same rpm as maximum power. But, that's for you to research and learn, not for me to teach.

Would be one helluva 150 to hit that (96 miles per hour). I had a Honda CB 350 for my first bike. Supposed (according to Honda) to go 103 miles an hour. Had 36 horsepower but it was really a 90 mile per hour bike (indicated).

Read it again, try to understand (I think I made my point clear enough). And try not to pretend to be superior; you're not.

Ok, so bottom line, will the new one be:

1) faster than the old one,

2) about as fast as the old one, or,

3) slower than the old one?

I'm not a "tech" guy, so a straight answer would be appreciated.

Thanks

I would guess either 2 or 3.

I'm really disappointed. Take a look at the close up photos of the engine and the physical engine specs. They've done a cheap job of keeping the engine, changing it to FI. Changing the fairing, adding weight to the pipe and rims, and that's it.

Certainly count me out of trading in just to buy the same engine again, when a 2nd hand ninja is only 20k more.

thomo, I guess the thinking was ..."if it aint broken dont fix it." The engine in the CBR has proved to be bullet proof with good power from its capacity. Without large investment in re-tooling etc for a maybe slight gain, commercialism rules.

Honda have addressed the emisions requirements by adding FI and the new exhaust system. Both I presume at minimum cost possible so as to keep the bike in a competitive price bracket. The FI change has resulted in a 15% increase is "reported" power. That is a very significant increase.

Also with the new bike Honda have addressed the 2 main consumer complaints, Bigger fairings (and hopefully better lighting) and wider rims/tyres. The frame if remaining the same (which I would presume is the case) gave good handling so why change it?

Of course there is a trade off in weight, bigger weighs more. So its a damned if u do and damned if u dont scenario.

Given city traffic, where by far the majority of riders use their bikes, I would go for a CBR anyday over a ninja. Clear open road touring, ok the Ninja would be better,

But really you need compare the Ninja to the CBR 250, when and if it arrives. Sure a second hand Ninja 250 will be cheaper than a new CBR 250. But will be comparable presumably to a new Ninja 250.

But I would be very confident the CBR 250 will eat the Ninja for performance on the open road, and the Ninja wont stand a chance in traffic.

At the end of the day...its all about personal choices. Luckily we dont all think the same, and have differeing requirements determined by the use we put our bikes to.

Untill the chance to see and ride the new CBRs (150 and 250) is available, any realistic judgement cannot be made.

Roll on next Saturday!!

You totally missed his point in trying to look smart.....if the peak torque is 17 N-m @ 8500 rpm, then it works out to have 20.3 hp at the same-same rpm and thus stating later that max power is down to 19.5 at 10500 actually means it's not max power......but feel free to mock someone who stated perfectly clearly in his post what he was intending to.

It used to be that the CBR 150 was the "bike of choice" for the loan sharks, but recently I've noticed that some of them have upgraded to the Ninja 250.

:whistling:

Perhaps, but I have yet to see a Ninja 250 on the road with the exception of those that joined me for a ride. On the last road trip that I did (with Mbox, TonyBKK, ThaiCBR, and Marcos (forget his board name) there were at least a dozen CBR 150s that I spotted over the course of 2 days....I did see a pair of falang owned ER-6N on the road on the way down to Kamphaeng Phet though.

Marco's board name is Marco, Dave :) Just got off the phone with him- he's about 80km NW of Nan and having a wonderful time since getting the front wheel on the BMW Land Yacht balanced in Chiang Mai (It was WAY off).

As for the popularity of the Ninja 250R, I see more and more of them on the road. They're quite common in and around Bangkok and Chiang Mai. Perhaps they haven't caught on out where you live (but I imagine there aren't many 250cc or bigger bikes out your way anyway, right?)

Cheers!

Tony

Interesting video showing Ninja 250 vs CBR 150. CBR holds it's own for a while, but then the Ninja quickly starts to pull away.

As for a CBR 250 vs Ninja 250. I think it would be interesting, and may depend on the driver of each. I question whether the CBR would "eat the Ninja for performance on the open road". And in city traffic, I have a feeling they would be about equal.

But that's just my opinion.

Oh, I also agree with BigBikeBBK that there are more frequent sightings of the Ninja here in Chiang Mai. And maybe one more if Honda doesn't bring a CBR 250 I like.
