Wats are amazing buildings, the craftsmanship that goes into them is awe inspiring. The question I have though is who designs them? Is there a central authority for designing the patterns on the walls? Or is each wat designed as the sponsor sees fit?

Probably the head monk decide on the design.

They seem to be like casinos...Each has a different local historical legend/motif/drawing card to prompt exploration by the locals who never seem to tire of visiting.....

I'm not sure of the hierarchy, but somewhere there has to be a record of all the different plans and designs....

I guess it's possible they are all completely independent???? Anybody know?.....

I was told today that there are people in Thailand that specialise in designing wats. Each Wat artist has his/her style, and the sponsor of the Wat chooses the artist and gives directions on the design.

All the ones we go to have never ending building going on, finish one hall they never seem to use then start on another
