US accused of not cooperating with human trafficking assessment

The National Police have said that the US assessment of Cambodia, which placed it on the Tier 2 Watch List of the Trafficking in Persons report for the second consecutive year, lacks transparency. National police spokesman Lieutenant General Chhay Kim Khoeun said: “This assessment is not all-encompassing and has not taken into account all of the efforts made in combating human trafficking.”

 

The statement was made yesterday, as he spoke to reporters following a meeting on measures to strengthen security and combat human trafficking, led by National Police Chief General Neth Savoeun, at the Ministry of Interior. Lt Gen Kim Khoeun added that the US did not reveal the methodology behind the assessment and did not invite the Kingdom to participate in the process.

 

“The US never asked us for our input on the process, yet it is our authorities which are dealing with human trafficking in the Kingdom. It is our police who have put in place educational measures and enhanced the capacity of human trafficking-related law enforcement, research and investigation.
