The National Reform Commission on Economy (NRCE) will propose to the Cabinet in November its strategic plan on creation of high-value agriculture, development of top-quality tourism, increasing opportunities for SMEs, making Thailand a hub of trade and investment, and human resources development, president Isara Wongkusolkij said.

The commission organised a public hearing and will propose the plan to the National Strategy Committee before it is presented later to the Cabinet for approval.

NRCE vice chairman Kobsak Pootrakool said the agriculture industry grew only 1.9 per cent a year between 2010 and 2015, so the commission aimed to increase its value by improving its structure from the old or traditional to a modern, high-value one.

For top-quality tourism, the commission aims to develop Thailand into a medical and wellness hub, with the medical business showing promise especially in this Covid-19 situation.

Kobsak said the commission planned to help SMEs by creating new opportunities, after these businesses were affected by the virus crisis.

The commission also believes Thailand can become a hub in Asia for trade and investment.

Kobsak said that amid the Covid-19 crisis, some businesses have moved their production bases to Asia, and Thailand was a country they were interested in.

Therefore, the commission wants related laws to be amended to facilitate investment in the country. The commission also wants logistics to be developed to serve increased investment in the future.

And as for human resources development, the  commission hopes to improve the education system, giving fresh graduates the opportunity to learn enhanced job skills.

Any skills would be welcome.

The disconnect between what the education system is churning out and what industry needs is as wide as the poverty gap !
