Lack of medical personnel in Thailand 'an obstacle in developing vaccines'

Vaccine development in Thailand is hampered by lack of adequate medical personnel, Yong Poovorawan, head of the Centre of Excellence in Clinical Virology at the Faculty of Medicine, Chulalongkorn University, said.

He posted on his Facebook page that shortage of personnel, not money, was an obstacle in developing vaccines. He cited an instance in 2009 when the Thai government was subsidised by the World Health Organisation and Brazil to develop a vaccine during an influenza outbreak.

However, influenza is not a complex disease but vaccines for Covid-19 require more medical personnel to develop in various fields. In Thailand, we have limited personnel and they work separately, he said.

The development of vaccines requires laboratories with good laboratory practices that follow good manufacturing practices regulations, and every section has to collaborate to reach the goal since there are several recipes to create.

At present, Thailand has developed three strains of vaccines, unlike four globally, due to the outdated method, Yong said.

You can be sure the best and brightest Thai researchers are working overseas in Europe UK US where they will earn the big bucks in state of the art facilities and probably put up with a whole lot less BS.

Mahidol U is ranked as the best university in Thailand, the 122nd in Asia and among the top 401-500 in the world...

May be, it'd be the right time to improve the education system??? Just saying...

Maybe they should consider hiring some foreign experts and learn from their vast knowledge.

It's no coincidence that medical advances are common across all of Europe and the US, that's where the talent is most concentrated.

Move some of that talent around and you get results. Plenty of money will bring it to you.

Good luck hiring vaccine experts now though, I think they're all very busy.

Can't the govt come up with another 2 billion baht development package to help kick it along?

This fella does like to get his face in the news surprised he has any time left to do sciency stuff...

Why does Thailand need to develop its own vaccins? Wouldnt it be better to put those big brains in only a couple of countries and then sell the vaccins around the world?

Why should tiny and underdeveloped Thailand compete in vaccin production against the EU, US, and China?

Maybe focus those Thai big brains on Thai problems first and just purchase the vaccins when someone else develops them?

The Clown of the week had his picture shown again. Good for another week

555555 anutin saying it's near completed and not to long ago thailand was saying it was difficult to test the vaccine because there were not enough invections . Now it's a lack of personnel ?? Isn't it more easy just to say your not the brightest kid in class ?? Containig the virus as one of the best in the world doesn't mean your up there when it comes to developing a vaccine .

It's all gone Yong in other words ????

Maybe he was referring to this:-

What Anutin says and what's reality is, is about as far apart as our salaries.

Thailand boasted about having the vaccine long before others, now they say we don't have the personnel or brains?

Seems Thailand declaring itself a vast medical hub is a bit premature then

Thailand needs a Plan B to have resources to purchase foreign produced covid 19 vaccines if it cannot itself develop a reliable and inexpensive vaccine. Likely to be available in 2021, albeit such immediate vaccine may require a 2-shot dosage,

Plan for the worse.

The upper 10% are being serviced quite well by the current system. Those 10% are in control and have no benefit from a well educated population. In fact, a well educated population may be a danger to the status quo. Just saying there is a reason for why things are the way they are. Don't fix it if it ain't broken and those that control the fixing don't see a problem.

The purchase of 2 submarines were cancelled or postponed,  use this extra money to get covid vaccine research help. And or buy 70 million doses when there is a vaccine developed..
