Scotty finally sent to the stars

The final voyal of Chief Engineer Scott .....Good Luck...and best wishes.... :o

The ashes of Star Trek actor James Doohan have been successfully launched into space from a site in New Mexico, watched by cheering fans.

Part of the remains of the actor, who played Montgomery "Scotty" Scott, were sent about 70 miles above the earth on a private SpaceLoft XL rocket.

His widow Wende was there to witness her husband going on his final voyage.

Doohan's ashes were accompanied by the remains of former US astronaut Gordon Cooper and those of 200 other people.

The flight had been repeatedly delayed but organisers Space Services Inc and all those gathered at the private launchpad near the town of Hatch finally watched the historic flight take off into clear blue skies.

When it had reached about 70 miles above the earth the nose cone of the rocket, containing the ashes, detached from the main body to land about 30 miles away.

From there, family and friends were to be reunited with the remains of their loved ones.

Star Trek creator Gene Roddenberry's remains were fired into space in 1997, six years after his death.

"While 'Scotty' lived this, Jimmy lived for this," Doohan's widow Wende said in a press release before the launch.

Famous misquote

Doohan, a respected Irish-Canadian character actor, said he adopted a Scottish accent for his Star Trek role because it was commanding.

Originally conceived as a minor character, Scotty became a core member of the Enterprise crew, often to be found protesting at Captain Kirk's ambitious plans.

The line "Beam me up, Scotty" has become one of the most notorious misquotes in popular culture.

Although Doohan became synonymous with the line, it was never actually said in the series.

The closest Captain Kirk came to saying it was in the fourth Star Trek movie, when he said "Scotty, beam me up".

And for anyone who thinks he was just an actor who played a hero on TV, regardless of his acting accomplishments, he was deserving of a hero's send-off:

At the outbreak of the Second World War, Doohan, aged 19, joined the Royal Canadian Artillery, and was eventually commissioned as a lieutenant in the 13th Field Regiment, part of the divisional artillery of the 3rd Canadian Infantry Division. Doohan went to the United Kingdom in 1940 for what became years of training. His first combat assignment was the invasion of Normandy at Juno Beach on D-Day. Shooting two snipers along the way, Doohan led his unit to higher ground through a field of anti-tank mines and took defensive positions for the night. Crossing between command posts at 11:30 that night, Doohan took six rounds from a Bren gun fired by a nervous sentry:[1]four in his leg, one in the chest, and one through his right middle finger. The bullet to his chest was halted by the silver cigarette case he carried, and his wounded finger was amputated which he would conceal during his career as an actor.

Despite his injuries, Doohan remained in the military, trained as a pilot and flew an artillery observation plane. He flew Taylorcraft Auster Mark V aircraft for 666 (AOP) Squadron, RCAF, as a Royal Canadian Artillery officer in a flying role in support of #1 Canadian AGRA (Army Groups Royal Artillery). All three Canadian (AOP) RCAF Squadrons were manned by Artillery Officer-pilots and 'aircrewed' by Artillery personnel serving as observers.[2][3] Though never actually a member of the Royal Canadian Air Force, he was once labelled the "craziest pilot in the Canadian Air Forces." One of the many legendary stories of his flying years tells of Doohan slaloming a plane - variously cited as a Hurricane or a jet trainer - between mountainside telegraph poles to prove it could be done, which earned him a serious reprimand. Yes indeed, great actor and a great individual,

He definitely nailed the role, being a plant operator I could lament along with him at unreasonable system and equipment request,

Hmmm. I have seen more relevant posts deleted in recent weeks by "The Mods". Location of Makro in Samui being one.

Forgive me !!. A great actor, in comparison to whom. Vinnie Jones, Rowan Atkinson, the Chelsea squad or Even the guy who plays "Les Battersby".

"When it had reached about 70 miles above the earth the nose cone of the rocket, containing the ashes, detached from the main body to land about 30 miles away.

Sheeeeesh. Those remains must have been laser guided. Maybe they could sell the technology !!!

IMHO, it's more of a case of a family/actor trying desperately to make a "final buck".

No offence to you "Trekkies", but "Albert Square" was more entertaing.
