About 100 times.

There are no budget airlines plying the route. Who would? Only landing at Narita is 8500US$ per plane (compared to 1700US$ in BKK).

The cheapest usually are Air India, United, NorthWest. Whatever we may say about them, there is an "BKK" leg of their full route.

Check the ungodly hours the US airlines leave BKK. You should check in straight from a party.

Anything worth money is twice their price. Somehow, Thai is among the most expensive (2-3 flights a day) but certainly far better than previous 3 and still below the best - ANA, JAL (have 2-3 flights a day), SQ (1 Tokyo, 1 Osaka).

Never realised that it cost so much for landing. That would explain me not being able to find very cheap flights.

Thanks for the information though, il check it out.

I was talking only direct flights.

My Japanese friends, when on a budget, use Eva, China Airlines or Korean Air, with a stopover at their bases.

Now, if your time is worth certain amount of money, consider what you are spending while saving.

And, be careful if you find a cheap flight to Nagoya, Fukuoka or Osaka. To get into Tokyo from these places may easily cost you 300-500US$. Almost, if not more, than a cheap flight into Japan.

Working for 1 of the 3 airlines listed above I had to laugh at "think_too_much" comment. He must have flown with me before. I fly that route all the time for work and have certainly left directly from a party/late dinner to work that flight! Flight leaves at 6am which means as crew we get there at 330am - which means leaving Silom at 230am. There are many reasons we leave so early. We arrive from Tokyo around 1am that morning via the USA. Many of our flights from States 'hub" in Tokyo so people can connnect to other asian destinations. On the return leg it's the same and flights arrive back on the west coast of USA early so that business passengers can start their day. Also having a plane sit on the ground cost money. Now as far as cheap flights. No, there are none really. It can be cheaper to buy a roundtrip BKK/LAX via NRT (Tokyo) than a round trip Tokyo. We have always been told (by management) that the NRT/BKK is a money loser and is put on just as a service to compete. The flights are always full but when I look at the passenger list in First/Business class I can see most of the seats are upgrades or frequent flier tickets. Yes we know if you a "real" first class passenger so you can't fool us!

I fly Bangkok-Tokyo with JAL. I can recommend JAL for good service. The flight is expensive at around 30K Thai baht but cheaper options involve a stop.

This is a good route to use Air-Miles on, because it represents good 'value for miles accrued'.

I used to go with Cathay Pacific to Narita they were pretty expensive though, this trip I went Singapore Airlines 4,000 Baht cheaper than CX and direct from BKK, plus I have a lot of miles that I can use to upgrade with SQ.

Cheaper it is, as it is inconvenient. The SQ995 leaves 9:25 am, they are among first flights for the day.

They must allow 2 hours minimum for check in, means 7:25am....to be there that time one has to catch first Nartia Express that leaves 6:08am from Shinjuku....if you are walking distance from the station, as I am, that means wake up at 5am.

Narita airport opens 6:30am for incoming flights.

The only way to fill those planes is by offering cheap fare and /or upgrades.

UA leaves at 6am and is 1/2 the price of a TG flight leaving at 7:30am

It says a lot on the value of the product

But the OP asked about cheap tickets......

I find the SQ flight to BKK to be a great flight. You arrive nice and early afternoon in BKK and SQ service is great. You only need to be at uncrowded dedicated check-in in Narita 1 hour before flight. Unlike the US airlines, no free upgrades either.

In fact, that's the only flight out of Tokyo where I got a free upgrade. Once.

The flight is great as day flights usually are. Only that early wake up.

Out of BKK, 6am UA flight means no sleep that night. One time, they moved me to TG flight, UA was full and was after the people going all the way, not to Tokyo only.

There, on TG, I was one of 60-70 passengers and had whole rows of seats for myself.

Day flight had one more advantage - I could see something. For example:

I always used to use Thai Airlines,or United. But last month I used Singapore airlines, the schedule worked out better and it worked out cheaper!!!!!....And unlike Thai and UA,the SQ flights were on time(Shock horror!!!!!)

Bangkok Airways fly to Fukuoka and Hiroshima. Both currently 15,000 THB plus taxes

And then?

You pay airfare to Tokyo almost that much or catch Shinkansen train for another 12,000B to get into Tokyo.
