PM orders immediate crackdown on online gambling websites

The prime minister has ordered the Digital Economy and Society (DES) Ministry to block 1,202 online gambling websites within 15 days, Anucha Burapachaisri, spokesman for the Office of Prime Minister, said.

On September 23, the ministry began collaborating with several organisations, including the Office of the National Broadcasting and Telecommunication Commission, to block access to the gambling websites.

The ministry recently requested 220 warrants from the court, in addition to the previous 982, totalling 1,202 for violating the Computer Crimes Act.

A study showed that online gambling led to more losses than normal gambling for the addict, as it was easier to access. Therefore, it is important to solve the issue very quickly, Anucha said.

Oh goodie, another crackdown, been a while since we had one. Admittedly online gambling can be a problem in any country. His timeline is a bit tight though, absolutely no leeway in which to organise a committee. It will be interesting to see how they do in 15 days.

Meanwhile, buy your lottery tickets from any street corner in the Country to give the Government some income.

Just because, OK!

Many Thais I know play the online lotteries; Hanoi or Laos or whatever they are called. All set up to take money from and pay back into Thai bank accounts I note. There are also slot machine style sites. Never seen the appeal. Seems like a stupid person tax if I am honest.

About all the government can do is chase their tail blocking the sites though. Thais will not stop gambling online and new sites will spring up, while blocked sites will just shift to a new host and URL.

Don't forget about Horse Racing. But that is ok as well.

I'm sure people will find a way around the blockages not really that difficult ........................LOL

Everyone seems to be missing the point here. Its not that he doesn't like gambling, he simply doesn't like to see other people (especially foreigners) making money by competing with the police.

A sign of the economic times.

Maybe it's just me, but I've noticed a lot more lottery vendors and a lot more people showing interest in lottery tickets.

Not to forget the underground lotteries that use the same numbers but have better payouts on the two and three didgit numbers. Of course these are mainly run by police and local government figures so if online gaming is affecting their income then of course it should be clamped down on.

Don't ask impertinent questions.

If you haven't been closely affected by online gambling, it might be difficult to understand how perverse it is:

1. Use of colours, sounds and timing, designed to heighten an addicts dopamine response
2. If the person wins, they make them jump though hoops to get their winnings. Can take weeks, after so much documentation required. They then stagger the payments over time and send messages encouraging you to have another go, with what you've already won
3. Birthday and celebratory tokens of $100 free, to have a another go.

You could say, just don't open the email or visit the site. Which is like saying to an alcoholic, just don't go to a bar or enter a liquor store.

Online gambling is a scourge on society. In Australia, frequent TV ads during the footie, which kids are watching, tantalise folk to support their team and "gamble responsibly" as a feel good reminder at the end.

Your lotto ticket or state run lottery is not a pimple on the ass of this horrid industry.

How about the site that spams me every time I used the Thai Chana app?

Isn't there  a higher priority for a crackdown.

gambling it's only "illegal" because government doesn't have a cut vs state run lottery government has all of it

If they want to see the numbers of tourist return in the future---they should relax the silly laws they have on Casino's. They are a great draw card.

why ? anybody is stupid enough not to know how to use a VPN that even the ret in china cannot block ?

Fair play to them. Just trying to eek out some money to put food on the table. I hear what you are saying though, a small new local market just opened near to us. We went for a walk around to have a look see and I counted 8 lottery ticket sellers plus another 8 selling stuff that I can buy in Makro.
