Thailand’s Hazardous Substances Committee upholds ban on farm chemicals

Contrary to speculation by anti-paraquat groups, the Hazardous Substances Committee has reconfirmed its ban on the production, import, export and possession of the herbicide paraquat and pesticide chlorpyrifos, which came into effect on June 1st, 2020.

 

Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit, in his capacity as Chairman of the committee, told the media on Monday that they had considered the pros and cons of the ban, as well as the report by the Ministry of Agriculture and Agricultural Cooperatives, and concluded that the ban should stay because it has been in force since June.

 

He also said that there are credible reports confirming that the two hazardous substances pose a health threat, and they have been banned in several other countries.

Well done. If Thailand want to be a big agricultural food exporter they need to act as New Zealand and ban the use of all dangerous pesticides, GMO, antibiotics, hormones and other possibly dangerous additions to their agricultural practices.

 

Yes, well done. But what about glyphosate-based herbicides (Roundup, . . . ). Did Thailand succumb to the pressure of Washington?

Initially I thought it meant farmers were using up their stock even though possession is illegal, but then I noticed 'because it is cheap'. Does this mean it's still being sold?

A maintenance guy at our complex was walking around spraying the weeds the other day, that afternoon they had all turned brown. I asked him what he was using at it was very fast acting... paraquat was the answer.
