Sompong re-elected Pheu Thai chief in leadership reshuffle

Sompong Amornwiwat was re-elected as leader of the main opposition Pheu Thai Party on Thursday, less than a week after he resigned the post on Saturday.

 

Sompong quit after his strategist Sudarat Keyuraphan and her team resigned their posts the day before. All remain members of the party.

 

The change in Pheu Thai leadership comes after days of rumours that Potjaman na Pombejra, former wife of ousted PM Thaksin Shinawatra, has taken de facto control of the party and wants to restore it to its former glory. High-ranking party members have dismissed speculation that the party is about to join the coalition government, insisting it remains committed to leading the opposition.

 

Thursday’s meeting also selected 10 new deputy party leaders. These are Anudith Nakornthap, Kittiratt Na-Ranong, Chusak Sirinil, Kriang Kantinan, Suthin Khlangsaeng, Chaiya Promma, Anusorn Eamsaard, Yutthapong Jaratsatian, Somsak Chantapink, and Pichai Naripthaphan.

 

Meanwhile Nakhon Ratchasima MP Prasert Chantarawongthong was selected as Pheu Thai secretary general, and Arunee Kasayanond as spokesperson.

The party will not join the coalition, yes.

 

But it will join a civil "government of national unity" in October, after Prayut will have been told to step down and to go home. There will be some imposed "reconcilation" to re-unify the elite, and Thaksin will be welcomed back to join this "government of national unity" with Pheu Thai.

 

The elite will be happy as then they are strong enough to counter save the system, Thaksin will be forgiven as he will be loyal to the rest of the elite, he just will be happy that he can come home to spend the rest of his years at home. This is all to fend-off the threat coming from the students protests and Move Forward and to protect the status quo. 

 

The student protesters then will lack the support of the farmers from Isaan as Pheu Thai is part of the government, and unfortunately Move Forward, the only honest party which acts in the interest of the people, will be weakened by this.

 

Under this "government of national unity" nothing will change, everything will stay as it is. Only the toxic influence of Prayut and Prawit will be finished. They will promise "true democracy, a new constitution, elections. Neither of this will be fair, however. 

 

At least this all is the plan of the elite now. Wanna bet?

Thaksin reporting his good relationship with the highest institution.

Army has passed to the Kings men after a time of the Eastern Tigers.  I still hope the students will get all they deserve, but the forces of 'the good people' may not agree with me what it is they deserve.

The King is due back for a visit longer than a day trip this month.  Interesting times.

Makes sense; he has an increased number of MPs since the dissolution of the Future Forward party and after Prayut and Prawit seems to hold most sway over parliament.

A while ago I saw him give an interview for CNA in Singapore. He spoke good English and came accross as a reasonable and able politician. I know many posters dislike him for his remarks about foreigners, but he is not the first politician to curry favour with his electorate in this way.

The Thais don't give a fig if he speaks good English. A reasonable and able politician? What's one of those? Also, the Senate picks the PM. 

Currying favour with the electorate is all well and good, but I have yet to come across a politician that means what they say and delivers a on promise. And I should imagine, based on some of the local chit chat where I live, dissatisfaction with politicians is rife, but no one will do anything about it. The Poo Yai Ban in the village being a case in point.

Speaking English allows a politician to make an impact on the international stage. Prayut could not give an interview in English, Yingluck before him was embarrasingly poor when she did.

As Health Minister, you could say that Anutin has done well in the role if figures on Covid infections and deaths are your measure for success.

Now both Thaksin and Yaowapa allegedly have Covid 19,  living in the same building in Dubai, only Yingluck was spared.

Fling Sausage's scenario is interesting but there are possible problems.

The red shirts, a sizeable proportion of Thaksin's support base might not accept his deal with the establishment. 

The red shirt leaders might if the money's good enough, plus they envy the new generation leaders such as Thanathorn, etc, but the rank and file? 

The elite and middle class who hate and fear Thaksin will never accept such a deal.
