Can any non imm visa be initially extended for any reason?

Featured Replies

Say, for example, you obtain a three month ed visa and during those three months you get married and stop studying. Can you extend it based on marriage or do you need to get a new visa? Or you get an o visa based on marriage but during those three months you split up with your wife. Can you extend it due to being 50 and retired or do you need to get a new visa?

It should be possible to extend you the visa you were issued (non-ed) for attending school but it may depend upon the office where you applied for the visa and will apply for the extension.

It could also be used to apply for an extension based upon retirement.

The only way you could get a different visa category issued would be to leave the country and apply for new non immigrant visa at a embassy or consulate.

Thanks. Is it actually written anywhere by immigration that "Once you have obtained a three month non-imm visa it can only be extended for the reason it was initially granted, and then after that further extensions can be for different reasons"?

This may be a stupid question, but I'm trying to understand the rationale behind having many different types of non-imm visa and limiting the reason for only the first extension.

Why not just have a standard "non-imm" visa that can be applied for under a number of valid reasons, and later extended for any of those reasons?

No

But some offices have their own rules.

The immigration order for extension of stay ony states a non immigrant visa is needed for a extension.
