Thailand to make, supply AstraZeneca's COVID-19 vaccine

(Reuters) - Thailand has agreed to manufacture and supply AstraZeneca Plc's experimental COVID-19 vaccine in the southeast Asian country and other nations in the region, the British and Thai governments said on Monday.

 

The announcement by the British embassy in Bangkok did not specify how many doses of the vaccine candidate, AZD1222, would be distributed in Thailand. It also did not disclose the financial terms of the deal.

 

AstraZeneca is providing the potential vaccine, developed by scientists at the University of Oxford, at no profit during the pandemic and would work with Siam Bioscience to set up manufacturing facilities, Thailand's Ministry of Public Health said in a separate statement.

 

"With the expected technology transfer from AstraZeneca and following Thai FDA regulatory approval, the company is aiming to have the first batch of vaccines available in the middle of next year," chairman of Siam Bioscience, Satitpong Sukvimol, said.

AstraZeneca has signed several deals with companies and governments around the world to supply more than three billion doses of the vaccine as it gets closer to reporting early results of a late-stage clinical trial.

 

The company was not immediately available for further details on the Thailand agreement, which also includes the country's largest industrial conglomerate Siam Cement PCL.

What ever happened to the Thai's vaccine that they were so proud of?  Oh let me guess, it never got off the ground.  Go figure.

Vaccine will be ready by the middle of next year.  Will that be at the end of June or early July???

It really isn't important.  

Remember, vaccines must be widely available, not just available.  

Until a large portion of vaccines are available earth wide this will continue.  And the first to get it are doctors, nurses, health care practitioners, firefighters, politicians, back of the line for you!

Last Fri it was stated that the Vaccine would be available at the beginning of next year, now it's the middle... Time will tell, but given Thailand's past track record of meeting any stated deadlines for Projects I wouldn't be holding my breath.

This vaccine is still undergoing tests. It's been halted in the USA. 

 

It is rumoured to provide only short term immunity - something like 6 months. But may lessen symptoms for a year if you catch it. 

It would be better to prove it's effectiveness first , before mass production starts ...

Effective may be less important than you suppose. The main "job to be done" here is to provide governments with a credible narrative for re-opening their economies. They have backed themselves into a PR corner by massively overreacting and terrifying their populations. A vaccine from Oxford University sounds credible, and that might be the only escape route available to governments.

I believe the Thai vaccine was put on hold until January 2021. Their manufacturer for the vaccines for Phase III trials was overloaded with orders and could not commit until that date.

That’s interesting I thought Thailand had come up with there own vaccine so why would they start producing a competitors vaccine. I can only conclude the the Thai vaccine was a figment of the Government’s imagination in other words total BS

Let’s hope they test it on the government first just to make sure that there has been no Chinese interference 

Unless AstraZeneca is actually on site and producing the vaccine with the Thai's, then isn't a Thai version of the vaccine a generic, and not the same as, or, in Thai words it's going to be like a Rolex you find on the street vendor table.  When you ask if the Rolex is real, you get the standard answer "Same Same"

True. And surely mandatory for Foreigners. Many who wont even wear a mask.

Who will leave Thailand if the jab is necessary on entry and every 90 days?

Happens quite often in clinical trials, moreso in huge trials such as those going on for covid. Astrazeneca had a similar pause of their trial a few weeks ago, it resumed after about a week.

But must have health insurance to cover side effects or if the vaccine gives you Covid

Notice how absent from the world stage the US is in this monumental crisis. And guess where I'm STUCK? Aieeeee HELP! Get me out, I can't wait until after the election, when civil war erupts under Trump's terrorists! Still paying for my apt in Makkasan.

same as with their other genius' invention such as dengue vaccine or some cancer treatment.

Looks like the US is on track to have the same number of deaths as years past, so maybe there is something about only 6% of the people are dying from covid, while 94% have multiple comorbidities.

I presume the connection with the cement company will be so as to encase the trial patients who didn't work out so well for transmittal to the Gulf of Thailand.

So twice the supply will be needed over a year or more if less efficacy.
