Iris Recognition... Any Point?

Featured Replies

i recently used this service, super breezed through immigration then had to wait 30mins for baggage to arrive.

I have two upcoming flights/connections through Heathrow soon. Is this a scan of the optical retina? Seriously, which side do they scan - left, right, or both?

Precisely, I always have to chuckle at the people who leap to their feet the moment the plane stops and then stand in the aisle waiting for the doors to open. You see the same folks gathered around at the baggage claim having gained nothing.

I have a gold card that enables me to use the Malaysian passport channel at KLIA, little or no queue, but it's only really a benefit when I'm travelling light with no checked in baggage.

its the iris of both eyes that is scanned.

I had a bit of time to kill a few moths ago so decided to enrol ( it was free ). The "selling" point was that it would save you time by cutting out the queues at immigration. It did indeed cut out the immigration queue but as I said I then had to wait 30 mins for the baggage to arrive.

For non UK citizens or for UK citizens?

Any point?

Of course ... a lot of people are making a lot of money out of it. Great scam.

It dependands on your immigration satus in UK, so not just for brits, other permanent residents, people with right to remain for more than 6 months and other frequent visitor possible.

They will check your status when you ask to enrol.

I've only ever had the iris check once, and that was in Shanghai at the US Consulate General. They let me in even though they'd never registered my iris(es) before.

Well, there has to be a first time they record your iris, right?

You can enrol if you have to have the right to stay in the UK more than 6 months, usually under some sort of FLR or ILR status.

You apply on departure from the UK. Not all airports have them yet.

When coming back, you can use them. For some reason, every time I leave the UK I'm always at a terminal which doesn't have a registration desk. Pity!.
