US unmoved by requests to amend MoU: Over 1,000 Cambodians in the US waiting for deportation

Despite Cambodia repeatedly requesting an amendment to an agreement covering the repatriation of Cambodians who commit crimes in the United States or suspend deportations of its citizens until a new one is made, the US embassy still insists that it is Cambodia’s obligation to accept its citizens.

 

Government spokesman Phay Siphan said yesterday that negotiations to amend the 2002 Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) between the Cambodian and US governments over the deportations has seen “no progress”.  He said the deportations seem like a “double sentence” of those convicted of crimes.

 

“I hope the US will reconsider the issue in a humanitarian sense. We are not reluctant to accept our people, but we ask them to consider the humanitarian factor so that those Cambodians can integrate into their community. Some of them do not speak Khmer, some others reportedly committed suicide after being separated from their families [in the US],” Siphan said.
