Amid serious flooding across the Kingdom especially in the border province of Banteay Meanchey, Prime Minister Hun Sen yesterday travelled to visit the worst-hit areas in the province to provide aid and encouragement, as thousands of people were evacuated from their homes. At the same time former opposition leader Kem Sokha also visited hundreds of flood victims in the province, where he donated food and supplies.

The flood situation in the provinces is getting worse, amid heavy rainfall in Cambodia and Thailand which contributes to flooding downstream to border provinces. Provincial governor Oum Reatrey said yesterday that at 5.20am, 15 metres of the Ang Khaidon Dam broke which caused flooding along 560 metres of National Road 5, which was 0.2 metres deep. Heavy trucks were banned from traveling along some portions of the road.

Reatrey said the floods affected 60 communes in nine districts, resulting in 16 deaths, including three children. He noted that floods have affected more than 67,700 houses or 107,100 people. Reatrey said authorities have evacuated more than 4,200 families to safety while more than 62,300 hectares of rice fields were flooded. He noted that 134 schools and nine commune health centres were temporarily closed due to serious flooding.
