How To Access Hidden Files/folders

Featured Replies

I've already gone to Tools>Folder Options>View>Show Hidden Files, but I still could not see/access the file. I know the file is there because right clicking on the folder that contains it still shows that it still contains the file.

Did I miss anything?

show hidden file doesn't show the "system" files (the one marked as Hidden and System) for that you've got to unchek the "hide protected operating system file" as well (same place as show hidden file a litle down in the list.

What file is it?

It contains word and notepad files, for my own personal use like bank account numbers, etc. Doing a search on the "hidden" files results in nothing despite having "ticked" the "show hidden file" box. But if I move or copy the whole folder containing the file(s), I see them as they are being moved.

No it's not an encrypted file (unless I have inadvertently), but just a folder which I simply "hid". I normally was able to unhide the folder whenever I needed to.

Would it help to mention that I remember moving the hidden folder to a different physical drive without "unhiding" it? I just tried copying it back to the HDD that used to contain it. I still can't see it(them). But I saw it being copied back.

Was i speaking in the wind, or too hard to understand ?

Try this Tools>Folder Options>View> and untick "hide protected operating system file" then you should see your files, maybe because i mentioned '"system" you thought i was speaking about something else, actually any files in windows can be "flagged" as Hidden and System together even if they aren't system files and then despites the whole "Show hidden file" being ticked some files are still hidden on purpose.

Naka.

ok when you unchecked that did you see a lot of "new" files like ntldr.sys ntdetect.exe in your c: ? if not then you didn't untick the box properly "or" you aren't running with an admin account

you aren't running with an admin account

my guess .

No, I did not see any of them in C:

There is only one account, and presumably, it is an Admin account.

Now I tried hiding another file anew...no problem. But now, I am not able to unhide this particular as well. Which means that all hidden files are now unaccessible/invisible.

Very strange!

if you don't see the ntldr and ntdetect.exe files in your C, then most likely the "hide protected system files" under tools>option>view is TICKED, and if, you are pretty sure it was "unticked" but whenever you come back to tools>option>view it IS ticked then your account is not admin (maybe power user).

To be sure about that go to control panel>User accounts, and check if your account is really administrator type, (and having "One" account doesn't mean jack acually the "Administrator" account is hidden and not accessible on normal boot by "default" :o

Just checked Control Panel>User Accounts, and it indeed is an Administrator Account.

I used the program Nero and the folder/files are visible. I was finally able to access the folder and copied all the data to a new folder (unhidden). But still, it remains unaccessible through Windows Explorer.

Thanks again, Kyosuken!:o
