Report Ho Chi Minh City Plans for All Electric Motorbikes by 2030
File photo for reference only Ho Chi Minh City has initiated plans to transition all ride-hailing motorbikes to electric by 2030, with a master plan set to be finalised by June, followed by public and expert consultations. This proposal aims to convert the 400,000 motorbikes used by ride-hailing services, a significant sector in the city's transport system. During a meeting last Saturday, city officials discussed the proposal, which includes on-site surveys to determine implementation needs, such as integrating charging stations with rest stops. Post-consultation, a detailed roadmap for the transition is expected by July. Prominent players in the ride-hailing and delivery services market, like Grab, Xanh SM, and Be, rely heavily on motorbikes. Xanh SM, a subsidiary of Vingroup, currently leads in using exclusively electric vehicles. The initiative's broader transport greening strategy includes a vehicle emissions control program, slated for completion by the year's end, focusing on incentives for taxis, buses, and public agency vehicles. The plan also considers policies for buying back and exchanging old vehicles for electric ones and restricting fossil fuel vehicles to achieve emissions control by 2030. As Ho Chi Minh City expands to include regions from Binh Duong and Ba Ria – Vung Tau provinces in an administrative reorganisation, the impact and feasibility assessments are underway. Le Thi Thu Thuy, vice chairwoman of Vingroup, advocated for prioritising electric vehicle use, supporting vehicle conversion, and expanding charging networks. City chairman Nguyen Van Duoc emphasised the importance of green transition as a global trend and vital for sustainable development, announcing the formation of a steering committee to oversee the transition beginning with consultations. Report Flash Floods in Bac Kan: Four Dead, Extensive Damage
Picture courtesy of VN Express Heavy rain has led to devastating flash floods in Ba Be district, Bac Kan Province, resulting in four deaths, one missing person, and significant damage to crops. The deluge hit Tan Luot Village, Dong Phuc Commune, late on Saturday night after more than two hours of rainfall, sending floodwaters mixed with soil and rocks down from a mountain stream. Lan Vy, a resident of the commune, described the usually low water stream that turned into a torrent, forcing villagers to flee as their shops and homes were swept away. By Sunday morning, the village road was littered with debris. Another flash flood occurred in Yen Duong Commune around the same time, collapsing a house, killing two people, and injuring one more. Nong Ngoc Duyen, chairman of the district People's Committee, stated that rescue teams were dispatched to both sites to find the missing victims. The Vietnam Disaster and Dyke Management Authority is coordinating with local authorities to manage the catastrophe's aftermath. This tragic event is compounded by earlier weather disasters, including a landslide in Lai Chau Province that killed five people. The region's heavy rains are attributed to a low-pressure trough and southeast winds bringing maritime air. In Yen Duong, over 215 mm of rain fell from Saturday night to Sunday morning. The forecast remains grim, with continued rainfall expected to exceed 100 mm in parts of the northern region, raising concerns about more flash floods and landslides.
