Police are searching for a woman who abandoned her newborn female baby on Mumon-Nakwang Road in Udon Thani’s Mumon subdistrict.

At noon on Tuesday, Muang Udon Thani officers were alerted to a newborn left at the side of the road. When they arrived at the scene, they were met by Watchara Jaruchai, 27, a local of Amnat Charoen province, who said she found the baby while driving back to her residence from Samrong Yutthawas Temple, where she had made merit.

“I found the baby girl lying on the side of the road with no clothes. Her body was all red from sunburn and had insect bites all over,” she said. “I picked her up, covered her with my jacket and drove to Udon Thani Hospital as she was not moving but was breathing.”

Police contacted the hospital and were informed that the baby was stable. According to one of the nurses, the infant was born just about 4 hours before she was abandoned. She suffered from dehydration, dry skin and insect bites.

Watchara reportedly named the baby “Wanmai”, or new day.

“The umbilical cord was cut rather cleanly so the mother might have had someone who knew about child birth,” the police said.

“We will search surrounding areas to identify the mother and ask nearby hospitals if they have any clues,” the police added.

What must have gone through the mother's mind - possibly the most stressful moment in her life.

It starts back home where everyone pushes the girls to get married (a rich guy naturally) so to keep the money flowing. Some girls end in the sack and, due to the excellent education, they never use contraceptives of any kind. Once pregnant, the boys make a runner for all they care, leaving behind the girl with the pregnancy or the child(ren).

Only once women start fighting for their rights and can take fathers to the cleaners for their little fun session and continue to contribute their (at least financial) share of the burden, only then such incidents will be reduced to mentally troubled mothers. For the time being some girls, mostly not the brightest candles on the cake, do not see any other alternative but abandoning the child, show up at a monastry/temple to pray for absolution and forgiveness but will never ever forget what they did nor knowing the outcome of the action. Revamp society structures, as far as that is concerned.

Thai police provided a disgusting bullying photo op in the last reported case of child abandonment where they obviously bullied a poor woman who had left her child with food and clothing to be found in a safe place. What kind of photo op will they provide for this case?

It's hard enough to imagine a mother abandoning her child in a safe place in the hope that she will be found and cared for. But it's really tough to think she would abandon her newborn naked by the roadside in the sun.

Maybe it was a male who wasn't necessarily the father that was responsible for this ?

Glad that infant wanmai has been saved. I hope Thailand has a procedure so some childless couple can adopt her.

When thai mothers send their daughters to "work" in pattaya and live off their earnings, then abandoning a newborn  is nothing. For tourists its fun, hot slim sexy girls, but when we get close to one of those women, we see how they are abused by their greedy family.

Every new day is a new mental harassment, new demand for money.

Being born as a girl child in Thailand sucks.
