Elephant hunting down but species still endangered

The hunting of wild elephants has dropped dramatically in the Kingdom over the last 20 years, due to tougher law enforcement. Environment Ministry spokesman Neth Pheaktra said yesterday that the killing of wild elephants occurs for a number of reasons, including during human encroachment into their natural habitats in protected forest land and also for their ivory tusks and tails, which are sold for use in traditional medicine.

 

He said that in Cambodia, there are between 400 and 600 Asian elephants, most of which live in the Cardamom Mountains, the northern plateau of the Tonle Sap and the eastern highlands of Mondulkiri province. “In these regions, elephant hunting has sharply declined over the last 20 years due to the authorities’ ability to enforce prevention measures in accordance with the law,” he said.

 

To continue to protect Asian elephants, the ministry said that the government has launched a new project.
