Thailand Road Carnage: SEVENTY EIGHT dead at the scene on Monday

Thailand's appalling road carnage continued on Monday with a staggering 78 people killed at the scene of road accidents.

Even with the kingdom's terrible record that makes it one of the most dangerous places in the world to drive, this was a bad day.

The total for 2020 now stands at 12,235 dead at the scene. The toll will rise considerably when deaths at and on the way to hospitals is added to the totals.

Some accident safety advocates put the real figure annually at between 24,000 and 26,000 dead.

A total of 13,956 at the scene deaths occurred in 2018, in 2019 it increased to 14,907.

So far 429 people have died in this month up to Monday 9th.

Highlighting the issue in an ongoing campaign is Thai media Daily News who chose to warn the public to be careful when navigating bends.

One 43 year old woman escaped uninjured in Nakhon Sri Thammarat when her Toyota pick-up overturned on a bend.

She said that an oncoming truck was eating into her lane as she went round the bend.

She lost control as she swerved and ended up overturned.

She thanked the fact that she was wearing a seatbelt.

The truck drove off, she noted, without offering her any form of assistance.

It doesn’t matter if it doesn’t matter enough to those in positions of decision making power.

Those who could affect change don’t seem to be interested enough in doing so...  its tragic.

The governments lack of interest in anything connected with road safety is enough to drive you round the bend...

Haven't seen many bust-ups in Pattaya for many months...maybe because there are no tourists around.

YEP!

No. 1. Great!

Note that the photo in the OP is of an accident where the driver survived!   LOL

Top causes of collisions and injury in Thailand:

1. Lack of driver education, training, and road safety marketing, leading to ignorance of consequences and selfish attitudes of drivers.

2. Poor enforcement, leading to widespread ignoring of traffic laws and principles eg speeding, seat belts, helmets, ghost riding, drivers hours, maintenance.

3. Preponderance of motorcycle use, with no protective gear, especially helmets.

4. Widespread drink driving, with little consequence of punishment like disqualification, heavy fines, jail time or higher insurance premiums.

5. Poor road design, with little vehicle separation eg motorcycles and trucks competing for space, dangerous u-turns from slow traffic into fast traffic, poor junction design with little signage or traffic islands to separate traffic, lack of roundabouts (traffic circles), poor marking of roadworks or damaged road surfaces, poor standard of road construction.

Until all the above are addressed, nothing will change for the better. As most victims (motorcyclists, pickup bed passengers and pedestrians) are poor, no one in authority cares about them.

I "partially" blame religion. If you believe that you have another life after this it does not matter if you cut this one short.

Try driving a little slower especially when approaching bends, not really that difficult ...........LOL

Anthony Burgess in Playboy interview suggested "Never fly an airline that has pilots who believe in reincarnation"

So we know how many die at the scene

Does anyone know the numbers who die in hospital or on the way? I personally know 2 who died at hospital....

Good for them, but it's not enough. An ongoing public driver education campaign is needed. All of those soap operas that are so popular on TV should have multiple educational public service announcements every half hour. Thai people need to know the concepts of right of way, traffic signals, and so many others. And highway engineers and unskilled workers deserve a good beating. Whoever heard of a stop sign 50 yards before the intersection? Send an illiterate out with a shovel to install traffic signs, with no supervision or follow-up inspection, and what do you get?

I would say the top cause was simple lack of patience.

Some Thai drivers will pull of the most ludicrous of maneuvers just to save a few seconds on their journey.

where they wearing masks?

If nothing else.....Thai drivers are sure advancing their road kill expertise!

Un believable ...but so tragic, it STILL! amazes me when I read about all these needless deaths.

If other countries in the world can do something to drastically reduce the amount of road deaths, surely amazing Thailand can too?

Lack (well ZERO)  understanding of how to even drive a car/motorbike etc, no understanding of how to behave whilst driving, total lack of understanding on how to see ANY hazard/danger even a bend in the road red light etc, the fact that they think they can drive while drunk, the fact that the majority seem to believe they are the only people on the road etc.........Then their is the total lack of enforcement by the  police..

Too many totally avoidable deaths ......

I thought for a minute you were being ironic.

Seems the authorities are clueless as to what can be done to deduce roadway deaths. Clueless and care-less.

78 Thais already reincarnated as taxi drivers.

Not clueless Thais like to be the first to invent anything even if it was invented centuries ago they will reinvent it as a first can't wait to see what they will come up with for traffic safety was going to be rubber road posts still waiting oh and less persons in the back of pick ups Fail !

Yesterday I saw a quite graphic TV  road safety add    they had a motorbike with 2 crash dummies falling from an 8 story building  smashing into the ground    the voice over said at 80 KPH its like falling from an 8 story building  then cut to a CCTV  crash of a motorbike  smashing into the back of a pickup truck.

The truck drove off, she noted, without offering her any form of assistance.

Which is quite understandable. ....
