BANGKOK (Reuters) - Domestic car sales in Thailand shrank for a 17th straight month in October, down 1.4% from a year earlier to 74,114 vehicles, after a 4.1% fall in the previous month, the Federation of Thai Industries (FTI) said on Tuesday.

The improved sales were helped by relaxed coronavirus restrictions, government relief measures and launches of new car models, it said.

Thailand is a regional vehicle production and export base for the world's top automobile manufacturers.

Being generous and saying Covid has been with us for 8 months one could say there was a worrying slide already happening long before the perfect excuse came along.

I do not venture off my little dung hill very often but when we have to go to Phetchabun every used car dealer on the highway has more cars for sale. Bangkok must be a hub of car sales.

The numbers don't quiet match up with was was reported about October 2019, but still that was down from October 2018.

Car sales fell in October year-on-year, totalling at 77,121 units, down by 11.3% on the same month in 2018, the Federation of Thai Industries announced on Wednesday.

Going to drive my Ranger right into the ground.  No replacements with an overpriced Baht.

A lot of Thais can't make the payments on the vehicles they bought on credit, and they are having their cars taken away by the finance companies.

There will be a lot of bargains available in the second-hand car market, as GreasyFingers mentions. I'd be amazed if the market for new cars improved any time soon.

Does the "Federation of Thai Industries" have a TAT (Tourism Authority of Thailand) spokesman working for them?

They seem to have a strange definition of "improved sales" ....

I'm in the same boat; I used to buy a new Honda every 3 years when the UK£ was worth something.  Now I can't even afford regular services.

Fortunately cars and trucks more durable today. Got 200k clicks on my diesel Ranger and still runs quite well.  But they really need to subdue the Baht.  Expats will no longer spend the big dough on these things, and that will have an effect.
