It's not going to open up, the zero COVID approach will continue for a very long time.

I can't see anything changing before the end of 2021 and that's being optimistic.

It’s all about the scorecard from covid and not the economic scorecard...

Yes but more people will die of poverty/starvation/depression/suicide from these measures than from covid.

Total greed, which shows their only interest. Open up the country to all and anyone who will pay, and kill thousands of their own. "But its the money that counts"????!!!!

Instead of begging why don’t they all get together and completely shutter All their hotels and lay off all staff. Can you imagine no hotels open in Bangkok??? That will get their attention and put the reality of what they are doing home to roost.

IMO that has happened to a certain extent already, thousands of people from the villages working in Bangkok were summarily fired and told to go home. My massage lady in the village was one of them.

In Chiang Mai, AFAIK several of the large hotels ( = expensive ) have closed their doors.

The best thing Thailand can do at this time is to give massive discounts for all ---  hotels, flights, bus, rail.  Domestic ONLY.   FORGET all these stupid quarantine - come with a million dollars  Ha Ha.   get your flights full, hotels staffed, rail and bus booked .     Until all countries are free off the corvid   forget the international travel.

The figures and debilitating effects of long Covid are quite frightening...something people are forgetting.

There is absolutely no scientific evidence for it being Covid related. The reports of long term problems are just jibber jabber on social media. Manyy viruses can have the same effect. Mental health in the current situation is likely a much bigger harbinger of it, with the psychology of fear breading anxiety and depression.

When harsh economic reality bumps up against state ideology and a junta that rules by emergency decrees.

and  go join the students to really get things  changed

Right now nobody will risk the 78% that is working by allowing the tourism 22% (of GDP) to 'restart'

Agreed, especially with Europe and the US in the grip of their highest level of Covid infections.

If  covid  killed 20%  of  all  those infected I might agree  but it doesnt,  they should  just accept  the losses and get on with it.

More will die on the roads every day than from Covid.

But that's not the PM's plan, it's to bring the country to it's knees, so that the ruling elite and wealthiest families can rule with an iron fist, just throwing a few scraps to the peasants.

They're hell bent on taking Thailand back 100 years.

My wife's family work in nearby hotels, here on the outskirts of BKK. They've been working somewhat with reduced hours, but are lucky to do so as many others have none.

Because of this, we've been buying extra food and they often come over to have dinner with us. Then their motorbike died, so they often borrow ours.

Then the govt's "50/50" program was a nice gesture, but guess who had to put in that 50%? Hehe. Even with Prayut footing 50%, they still didn't have much to scrape together.

Oh, us dirty farangs. We should just get out already.

Does this have anything to do with the country be closed to tourism?  Your pronouncement is no doubt a wise one.  It just seems to have a very tangential relationship with the topic.  Maybe save this gem for a topic where it has more relevance

Only the civil servants are benefiting from the 50/50, they have the monthly guaranteed salary to spend and the "extra holidays" given.

Something has to give! Get some good vaccines and open this place up.

Well you could be right about C19 regulations continuing but as far as not seeing anything change?

I tell you what ...change is quickly approaching & it is not going to be pretty.

Desperation/poverty does not happen silently or without major changes occurring in day to day life

Disagree. People in Thailand are more scared of the virus than a short term downturn of the economy. During lockdown I remember sensing the fear in the eyes when foreigners would approach them, that xenophobia fear was running rife.

Thailand is living in bliss at the moment without covid. They honestly don't know how lucky they are. Go see the images and horrors in Europe, who chose to go down the path of opening up.

I don't even fathom how you intend they just open up? What will happen, as is happening in Europe, is that the virus will run rife, there will be mass hospitalisations, loved ones being lost - at which point the government will put into action a new lockdown and close everything down. However, this time they may not be so lucky and eradicate the virus. In turn there will be no tourists turning up.

What they have now, is a domestic economy tickling along. No lockdown, and for those stuck in Thailand now they are safe from the virus and free to enjoy the country.

I really detest with a passion those who just say 'they should open up' and get on with it. They usually mention Sweden alot too. The same Sweden that in the last few days has announced lockdowns - guess their much lauded herd immunity experiment failed.

Much of what you say has many large elements of truth in it. However you have chosen to use language of extreme fear to get your point across. It is exactly this sort of attitude that isn't helping. Images and horrors of Europe, really? The statistics are very bad, people are dying, not as many as before, but my first thought of the horrors of Europe is the holocaust, I haven't seen those images. I never once saw fear in people's eyes during the first lockdown here and I'm thankful that they have handled phase 1 so well. But they do need to have an intelligent well thought out plan to reopen, including whatever safeguards they can. People exacerbating the fear for here are making the recovery worse here and in every country where there has been a good handle on managing the virus. IMO.

That one is for sightseeing in the Caribbean I suppose, you can't win a war with that.

yes get rid of the general and the baht will fall because the Chinese government will not back it up, they are expecting big things from the general and lots of money

For the Thai tourist industry, or any country's come to that, to expand back to pre covid levels people's incomes will have to return to pre covid levels. Many people are facing hardship through job loss. The last thing on your mind when you can't pay your bills is not holidays! End of 2021 or more like late in 2022 might see some recovery.

visa situation is not very friendly  for any farang

A cry to deaf ears. This government dose not care about people. They have now the means to control every citizen.

The will not do anything constructive to reopen the borders.

The will not support the business owners in any way.

It is time for them to disappear from the power. Inaddition the people should confiscate all their assets domestically and outside the country.

This incompetent government members should have nothing. make them poor.

It is a hard time for businesses but putting money before peoples lives is not the answer, until covid is totally under control around the world travel bans need to be enforced and the govt needs to help effected businesses/people more than they are, buying subs etc when the country is desperate is not  good govt policy.

Is it really money before lives? Or lives v lives? The average age of covid deaths is over 80 in most countries. Yes every life lost is a tragedy. So how about years of life lost through: poverty, malnutrition, unemployment, violence, domestic violence, suicide, undiagnosed or untreated cancers and other diseases. These things will mean many years of lives lost with the victims on average being much younger than the 80 plus folks who are not only susceptible to COVID but also other contagions such as flu or bacteria.
