As many as 730,000 Thais joined the third round of privileges offered under the “Khon La Khrueng” (Let's Go Halves) subsidised shopping scheme in just over an hour after it was launched at 6am on Thursday.

The scheme, which started on October 23 and runs until December 31, offers some 10 million citizens discounts of up to Bt150 a day on purchases at participating stores. The discount is capped at Bt3,000 throughout the period.

“We will publicise soon if another round is being held because some people may be disqualified if they don’t use their privileges within 14 days,” deputy government spokesperson Rachada Dhnadirek said, adding that the second phase of the scheme will kick off in January once this one is completed.

Just goes to show you how much the people need the help. This is a very small amount they are given in actuality.  Why not deliver a 50kg sack of rice, a few kids of meat, and the basic necessities to each household each month instead.

It appeared from the registration portal there were only around 1 million made available on Thursday and they were all gone within a couple of hours.

The Thai government subsidizes retailers who up their prices by 50% and the consumers, who believe they are getting a great deal, get shafted.

Ain't greed a wonderful thing.  Honed to a science here in the Land of Scams.

It should be needs based, but as normal its targeted for the middle-class and above and is rife for abused by retailers.  Plans like this don't do squat for the house-bound elderly who really could use assistance at a time where those who support them are having economic difficulties themselves.

I've talked with my wife about these "deals" before and we both believe we can do just as well by shopping for discounts at the retail level without depending on a government handout.
