Chamkar Mon district authorities yesterday held a ceremony to mark the 10th anniversary of the stampede incident at the memorial stupa near the Koh Pich bridge with a small gathering of families. Authorities said they attended the ceremony where monks chanted blessings for the victims of the stampede, which occurred on November 22, 2010.

Met Meas Pheakdey, City Hall spokesman, said the small ceremony was held yesterday due to the COVID-19 pandemic and was attended by Chamkar Mon district officials and the families of the victims. During the stampede, 353 people died and hundreds more were injured on the final day of the three-day Water Festival.

The government set up a commission to find the cause of the stampede and later announced that the tragedy was an accident. No one was held responsible. Soum Sopheap, the mother of a victim, said yesterday that the anniversary ceremony this year was a small gathering due to COVID-19.
