Labour Department to farm out migrant work permit applications to private sector

A government spokeswoman yesterday said that the Thai cabinet had agreed to proposals by the Labour Department to contract out much of the application for work permits for migrant workers to the private sector.

Ratchada Thanadirek was at pains to point out that the final decision will rest with the Labour Department as to who gets a work permit.

But utilising private firms in everything from the application stage to the final issuing of a work permit will mean a faster and more convenient service for potential workers.

An upgraded electronic system with data sharing potential means that applicants will have a 24 hour service and not be restricted to government hours.

There are expected to be 45 centers nationwide offering the new service that will be under contracts of 10 years.

Stand by for scams, graft, corruption in the private sector, and more scams. So much for using agents

In theory it sounds like it will be doable, but I can not imagine how big the lines will be at these new locations.  By the way, what will the Government workers do at the Labor Department oh wait they will be methodically screening the applications to ensure they are not fake and just nominee juristic work applications.

Adding an extra layer of bureaucracy to an already convoluted process.

This is going to be fun to watch, I suspect not so much for those needing to use the service.

Yes, privatizing and outsourcing government civil service operations has been a wonderful world wide success.

Just ask any British person!

More backhands being mulled????

Why don't the labour ministry hand-out jobs to the un-employed Thais..... okay , okay I know !

Isn't this what the agents are for, or do they only apply to farang visas?

No the 4 asian countries surrounding Thailand supply workers who need visas and work permits.  Most use agents like my GF did this year and that includes the WP which is listed on the back of her pink ID card.

Why even have a labour department?   It sounds like it is of no longer use to the Thai tax payer.
