Police asking courier, logistics operators to install X-ray machines to tackle wily criminals

Police are asking courier and logistics operators to install X-ray machines to screen packages for drugs, firearms and other illegal objects that criminals and drug dealers send via private services.

 

“From November 10-24, police arrested 29 suspects who had sent drugs via packages and seized evidence including more than 28,000 amphetamine tablets, 1.7 kg of methamphetamine and 118 kg of Krathom leaves,” deputy National Police chief Pol General Manu Mekmok said on Tuesday.

 

“The Covid-19 situation has inspired criminals and drug dealers to use private courier and logistics services to send drugs and illegal objects instead of using their usual channels,” he revealed.

 

Manu said he had ordered police divisions to work with private courier and logistics operators by asking them to register with the police and install X-ray machines at their distribution centres to scan every package for contraband.

 

“Drug syndicates are modernising their operations with the use of social media and a comprehensive network of private courier services,” he said. “They often rent a house or building as a distribution centre for smuggled drugs, while local dealers take orders via Line, Facebook or Twitter and send their drugs through private courier services.

 

“If you have any information about drug operations in your area, please forward it to the Royal Thai Police headquarters, or contact Hotline 1386,” he added.

Rest assured Mr. policeman that while you maybe looking for drugs, DHL and FedEx already and for long time now have been vigorously scanning every package that comes into Thailand and flagging any package that is found to have an item of value however small that to tax it for import duties and Vat... that is speaking from experience...  

Particularly all packages with the sender name 'Coyote'......^????

Dear Mr. Police chief, you agree that the big entities which hold the monopoly in the countries drug business don't use DHL and UPS to distribute their valuable goods, right? I mean, you must know it, as a Thai police chief, I guess. ????

I predict a precipitous increase in the sales of x-ray machines in the near future. Wonder who owns that company?

Since you seem to know it all better, then maybe you can explain how this happened? And maybe at the same time you can point us where in the OP was made mention of DHL and UPS or any other international courier

If the police want to install internal customs checks then they could have the law changed, get funding from central government and send staff to special bonded distribution centers around the country who would process all the parcels.

 

Asking independent companies to do this and presumably pay for the equipment and staffing out of their profits will never ever work.

 

This sounds like an excuse to me, an excuse because they're doing a bad job.

Xray machines costs thousands to buy, install and run, training operators to know what to look for takes thousands more... how about training some dogs to sniff out drugs/guns etc, they don't make mistakes.

I like to order some special chocolates from the U.S., sent direct by the chocolate company, and then forwarded from the U.S. ultimately to ThaiPost (not FedEx or DHL).

 

For the past year or two, every time I do such a shipment, the buggers open the package, tear open the manufacturer sealed package, and presumably do something with some of my chocolates...

 

Then repack the mangled, torn open box, and send it along to me....  Do they really think a well known commercial chocolates company is packing drugs in their boxed chocolates packages???

 

Are the couriers and logistics operators responsible for ensuring what they transport is legal?

 

If they are, shouldn't they open all packages? 

This is more about domestic deliveries, If i want to send a package locally using Kerry Express then the item is checked visually, is parceled in their office/depot and they check your ID. So why the need for X-ray.

There's millions to choose from spraying the sois with urine; defecating everywhere near food stalls; they can be found biting children in school playgrounds; or heard howling at the moon all night.  They are a tourist attraction in their own right - LOR (Land of Rabies.)

Sounds like a guaranteed way to get drugs through. just bribe the right guy.

if you go with a closed parcel it is not checked, this is not vietnam or china !
