According to a report from the Kampong Chhnang Provincial Health Department yesterday, 105 people have been poisoned by tainted rice wine in Toek Phos district, causing four deaths and five to be hospitalised. Kampong Chhnang provincial governor Chhour Chandoeun said yesterday that some cases of alcohol poisoning in Toek Phos district have now been sent to the provincial referral hospital and the seriously ill are being treated in Phnom Penh.

Chandoeun said that he has sent police to temporarily close provincial wine stalls, and inspect businesses to make sure they have the correct licence. “So far, we have closed more than 50 wine shops,” he said.

Or Vandine, Ministry of Health spokeswoman, said: “I call on all people not to drink rice wine that is produced without the proper technology, as it can cause danger to life,” Vandine said. The director of the Kampong Chhnang Provincial Health Department, Prak Von, said that only two people are still receiving treatment at Phnom Penh Hospital.
