A man nicknamed “Australia’s most prolific sperm donor” is now under investigation after fathering 23 babies in one year.

 

Alan Phan, 40, who lives in Brisbane, originally planned to donate only nine times but found it hard to say no to some women.

 

Phan eventually exceeded the limit under Victorian law, which states that a donor can only help 10 women conceive — including their own partner.

 

“I reached my ninth and I thought that was it. Then I received a message from a lady around Christmas saying the donation was successful, which then became my 10th and I thought, ‘Well I’ve already gone over my limit, I’ll just help a few more’ and it kind of blew out,” Phan told Kidspot in October. “Some of the original recipients weren’t too happy about it.”

 

Phan, who is of Vietnamese descent, first thought of donating after he and his wife, Merlyn, visited a fertility clinic while trying to get pregnant for their second child. At the time, he suspected himself to be infertile.

 

After learning that he was not, Phan decided to donate his sperm. To his knowledge, he was the only Vietnamese man doing it in the country when he started.

 

Phan’s sperm became the word on the street over time. Due to his ethnicity and high success rate, women desperate for a child lined up to contact him.

 

The 40-year-old calls his donations a “hobby” but suggested similarities to a full-time job since it requires him to exercise daily, take up to 20 vitamins and abstain from sex to ensure healthy sperm. On one occasion, he donated to three women in one night, two of which succeeded.

 

The Victorian Assisted Reproductive Authority (VARTA) is now investigating Phan for exceeding donation limits. Chief Executive Officer Louise Johnson says steps are being taken to ensure that no more families are formed using his sperm.

 

“This is a rare incident. We monitor information that comes to our attention and via the clinics but if someone is operating outside the clinic situation that’s very difficult to monitor,” Johnson said, according to 7 News. “My message to women would be to be very wary of men who are offering to donate informally. They are not protected legally or health-wise in relation to infection.”

Right, the article makes it sounds like there's no clinic or doctor involved. The sperm donation is happening the traditional way. Not too bad a gig, eh? Especially when you are donating to three women in one night.

Wait... he's 40. How's he able to supply three women in one night with sufficient sperm? A guy in his 20's or early 30's sure, but 40?

Note that some of the celebrities sell eggs and sperm almost as a part time job, if you have $1,000.000.00. Not sure why this is making the news. Is it the governments job to police this or is it up to the non-fertile families with dads that want to be fathers. As long as they aren’t in close quarter future breeding clusters, however it is what it is and I doubt very much the powers that be in Australia would be interested in my options lol

If making over  10 sperm deposits is illegal,  I would be getting the electric chair for sure.

I went to the sperm bank to donate. Nurse asked me if I'd like to masturbate in the cup. I said I'm pretty good, but I don't think I', ready for competition just yet.

Lol he lives in Brisbane which is 2000km from Victoria. How does Victorian law apply to someone who lives in another state. Is he flying to Victoria to fill the jar

I am not aware that filling the jar has to take place in the night.

And now tell me how a law can prohibit one from impregnating more than 10 women a year in "traditional" fashion.

The whole story is a mystery to me.

Unfortunately, a 30-year-old woman is now in danger of having her embryos destroyed since they were fertilized with Phan’s sperm. She is said to be under extreme stress.

 

The reference to "3 women in one night" could easily be about 3 successful fertilizations in the same day, using his donated material.

 

Seriously doubt he's doing it the old fashioned way, or there could be 23 potential child support recipients lining up lawyers.  Regardless of any written agreement to the contrary, he'd be on the hook because the courts will decide for the benefit of the child, trumping any agreement between the man and the woman. 

 

And his wife wouldn't be smiling in all those photos.  Even if she didn't mind him doing other women, she wouldn't be happy about the child support liability.

I didn't realize there was a limit on sperm donation. 23 does seem excessive though.

This article is absolute trash.  Says he is in Brisbane but then refers to the laws in Victoria not Queensland.

 

An he is viet.  Who would of thought austalasian babies where in such hot demand in Oz.

If you could assume to get 50 dollars monthly support, per child, once they are raised, making 100 of them seems like a plan for retirement.
