Bangkok Airways Pcl will launch a new route between Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) and Mae Sot in Tak province, starting February 1, 2021.

The newly added direct services will be operated with the highest preventive measures and standards, the airline said.

The daily Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) - Mae Sot (Tak) service will be operated using an ATR72-600 aircraft.

The first outbound flight, PG381, departs Bangkok (Suvarnabhumi) at 7.50am and arrives at Mae Sot Airport at 9.20am.

The first inbound flight, PG382, departs Mae Sot Airport at 9.50am and arrives in Bangkok at 11.25am.

The second outbound flight, PG383, departs Bangkok at noon and arrives at Mae Sot Airport at 1.30pm. The second inbound flight, PG384, departs Mae Sot Airport at 2pm and arrives at Bangkok at 3.35pm.

The last outbound flight, PG385, departs Bangkok at 3pm and arrives at Mae Sot Airport at 4.30pm. The last inbound flight, PG386, departs Mae Sot Airport at 5pm and arrives in Bangkok at 6.35pm.

I'm surprised there is enough going on in Mae Sot to warrant 3 flights a day. What is going on there? Is this the new gateway to Burmese entertainment complexes?

Airline minivans drop them at the river bank.

Thailands access to the new Diwai deep sea water port, which is why they have spent  billions of  Bht on tht Tak/ Mae Sot highway

Could well be, especially when the pandemic is over. Like Mai Sai, it is a border town giving access to Chinese/Thai casinos and markets in Burma. Nok Air already fly to Mae Sot (2 flights today to/from DMK).

additional information

I drove with my car from Bangkok via Mae Sot, Myawaddy and Moulmein to Rangoon; there is no faster connection overland. Despite the relatively desolate condition on the Burmese side, this will be the East-West corridor and hence that link makes perfectly sense. If the first MAQ-BKK flight leaving MAQ at 09h50 will be full, is yet to be seen. The Burmese border opens at 08h00 (and they are 30 minutes behind Thailand, i.e. 08h30 Thai time). If immigration is speedy, then you might manage to leave Myawaddy after an early breakfast and be in Bangkok for lunch!
Bangkok Airways, definitely my favourite boutique airline, spot on, professional and reliable. Albeit not cheapest but face one cancelled flight and you'll understand!

...which is not the aircraft in the picture accompanying the article

This is very good news. I was hoping the new airport would help attract a new carrier. My wife's hometown is Mae Sot and Nok Air, the only carrier flying into Mae Sot, has been ripping off customers as long as I have been travelling there. Prices are double or triple what other similar distanced routes are priced at.
