PHOTOS: Here’s what Pattaya looks like when there is an alcohol ban

Thai media 77kaoded reported that most of Pattaya's nightlife entertainment simply shut down on Saturday night after an alcohol ban came into force for local elections in Chonburi.

Reporters from the media went to Walking Street, Soi 6, Bua Khao and Sai 3 and found no alcohol being served in pubs and restaurants that were open.

Most were shut up and 77kaoded went with that caption "Entertainment Shutdown" on their photo of a deserted street.

The booze ban came into force at 6pm on Saturday and lasted for 24 hours for the elections on Sunday.

Thaivisa notes that downtown Pattaya had been very quiet on Friday night with little sign of visitors from Bangkok.  With Thailand jittery from a Covid-19 outbreak in Samut Sakhon the outlook for the Christmas and New Year holidays looks bleak.

Nothing to do with covid lockdowns at all, this is what happens when they charge beer drinkers 10Bt a slash. ????

Am out of town 10 km. Everyone drinking out on the streets at the restaurants on Saturday night. Mum and Dad shop selling like always. The ban is just to stop the farung from arguing about who is the best candidate for the local elections.

So they were just snooping around, hoping to catch someone selling alcohol. Nothing better to do I suppose.

Bars close when they cannot sell alcohol .

The streets are empty when the bars are closed

In the UK voting stops at 10pm. Cannot see any reason why they could not have opened up after voting finished since its a night life venue anyway

Bangkok Post said Bangkok and Pattaya had no elections and the bars could open??? They were all open in Bangkok?

Perhaps they were looking for a drink....

I don't know if it looks any different to the last time I drove around town at 23.30hrs, booze ban or no booze ban, Pattaya is a sad, derelict shadow of its former self, so sad to see this.

it looks like this pretty much every night now

Why stop alcohol sales?

Looking who has been voted in in the past, i would say let them try to fill in the ballots drunk and see if that gives better results. It cant be worse.

They all know the ban is coming so they simply stock up, plus the mom & pop shops. Dog and pony show that hurts businesses and workers alike

Pictures in one word - UGLY! - where did all that tourism money from the past go?  ????????????????????

looks to me like a night out in england just the same

whoah whoah whoah

slown down forest

you expect the politicians and people in charge to put 1 and 1 together???

looks  absolutely perfect to me. ????

Governments that do not run their country on a secular basis need to realise the economic impact their decision have on the economy of the country there are examples all over the world. I do realise that this alcohol ban was due to other political desires but when all the closures over a year are taken into account many workers miss out on the income no matter how meagre that may be effecting the entire community. Time for a rethink.

I think many will party at home this year, save on travel money [and fear of infection] and spend the money on food & booze at home.

I will, stocked up already.

On a brighter note Thailand might have its own a lump of moon rock in the next 10 years or so.

A lock down I can cope with, I just don't see any reason to ban alcohol sales like they did last time, the Mrs will be going out tomorrow to do a modest inventory uptick by a couple of cases of beer, a couple of large bottles of Gin & a modest amount of wine, I'll stay at home as long as they want, I just want to be able to enjoy a drink or 2 while watching a movie or TV series or 2, is that too much to ask ??

Voting in Thailand closes at 3pm, so in reality the ban until 6 has nothing to do with the elections. It's just another way of exercising control.

Why do the press keep on about poor old Pattaya ? There are 1000's of towns all over the world that are having the same problem without tourists. The big difference is that most of the other places are worth visiting, not so Pattaya !!

I read the same in a number of places.

Ban in all provinces except Bangkok and Pattaya.
