‘Little Myanmar’ COVID-19 cluster a ‘big lesson’ for Thailand

COVID-19 fears are rising in the run-up to New Year following the discovery of infection clusters in Thailand’s “Little Myanmar” and concern over possible super-spreaders.

Lab tests have confirmed around 800 infections among migrant workers at a shrimp market and nearby areas in Samut Sakhon province, just an hour’s drive from Bangkok.

The seaside province, known as Little Myanmar for its population of foreign workers, was locked down on December 19 as Thai authorities scramble to contain the outbreak. Recent visitors to the market have been asked to come forward for tests, as the outbreak spreads to nearby provinces where confirmed infections have reached double figures. The “Samut Sakhon [cluster] will be a big lesson for Thailand,” said renowned virologist Dr Yong Poovorawan.

A least they can go back to blaming the Burmese since there are no diseased farang grandpas about ????

The government refuses to name this outbrake as a second wave, arguing, that it does not have connection to the first one. That’s exactly why can’t be part of the first wave. Looks, like they are trying to minimise seriousness of this outbrake, that includes withholding information about the clusters in different provinces
Richard Barrow already on saturday said about 2 infections in bangkok. The government informed about it some 24h later, without detailes.
The government is scared of more demands to remove uncompetent health minister. But not disclosing info in a timely maner will have an opposite effect - people on social media are spreading info, fuelled by fear, and adding gossips.

In typical Thai fashion, they want to say and write Myanmar as often as possible when in fact it was THAI people who created this mess.

Putting cost of labor/ profit over health concerns has destroyed many business to disappear forever. Thai employers that hire illegals are the cause of their own demise, not poor and uneducated Burmese.

The land borders human traffic was always going to be a problem but they did not quite grab that so it was not handled well.

Here's hoping they jump on this now

So all the "camps" around Thailand that employ hundreds of migrant slaves need to heed this warning... reap what you sow.

Yes, but please tell us what exactly they will take from the lesson. Test more? Close all borders very tightly? Confine migrant workers to their quarters outside of work? Or will it all involve too much loss of face so they'll ignore the lesson (which seems most likely to me).

I wouldn't mind betting it came off the fishing boats. In which case, it sits fairly and squarely on the authorities and business interests who want to escape scrutiny. I don't think you can blame this on girls trying to earn a living.
