Employers warned against hiding migrant workers, especially undocumented ones

Business owners are required to report the number of migrant workers they have hired, while officials from the Department of Industrial Works in each province have been instructed to keep a close eye on the state of foreign workers, Industry Minister Suriya Juangroongruangkit said on Thursday.

 

“Business owners have been told to remain calm and not try to hide their foreign staff,” he said. “Shifting them to other areas will only increase the risk of the Covid-19 virus spreading from migrant workers to local people in other provinces.”

 

He further added that businesses that hire foreign workers should be socially responsible and employ Covid-19 preventive measures, including screening people coming from risky areas, ensuring everyone wears a mask and social distancing is applied in facilities.

 

“If you find a worker has contracted the virus, notify public health officials immediately so they can start investigating and can isolate people who have been in close contact with the patient,” he said. “The sooner we minimise the scope of the virus spreading, the smaller the impact it will have on the economy.”

 

As for news that some business owners in Samut Sakhon province, which has recently become a hotspot for infections, are moving their workers to other provinces to avoid inspection, Suriya said the ministry is looking into the matter. He said he believes these workers may have entered the country illegally.

That's ridiculous! All foreigners must pay for their own testing and quarantine and USD$100,000 covid insurance. If you can't or don't want to pay, stay out of Thailand. Thailand doesn't have money or resources to support everyone who wants to come Thailand.

Seems you're sorted the problem of illegal people entering the country, trust you have advised them and they fully understand to stay away if they can't afford to come here - - that was a very easy solution, wasn't it?

pity the government didn't think of it.

Oh and fine the employers of illegal migrant workers, 50,000 baht for every illegal worker. Close the factory for a month for every 10 illegal workers. Start hiring Thai workers and pay them a decent wage. Hundreds of thousands of Thai are unemployed.

Not sure about that, I see many many people crammed into the back of pick-ups heading off to building sites for very low wages 7 days  a week, I'm sure many of those would swap jobs for a decent living wage out of the heat and dust and lousy work conditions.

What makes you think they are qualified for jobs out of the heat and the dust and lousy work? I'm not seeing Thais filling in for the Cambodians on the building in the area of Bangkok where I live. More Cambodians seem to have returned - no idea whether they're legal or not. But I guess that will come under greater scrutiny.
I have a friend with a restaurant who started taking on Lao staff because of the difficulties keeping Thai staff, and the pay and tips are not lousy. But the Laotians went home in March and now she's finding the same old problems with relying on young Thais. My daughter found two temporary jobs to tide her over before going into something that was a higher position and better paid than she had before Covid. There are definitely jobs around but I'm not seeing an army of unemployed Thais rushing to take them.

Effective slavery is the Achilles heel of certain industries in parts of Thailand. It exists on a large scale. The seafood (catching and processing) industry in Samut Sakhon province for example is notorious for it. One recalls the scandals of child slavery in the processing plants a couple of years ago - a big hullabaloo, but was anything done? It all died down and things continued.

 

It is far cheaper for the unscrupulous employers to bring in labour from abroad, work them and keep them in appalling conditions (effectively slavery), even if it means paying off the appropriate officials; than it is to employ people on a proper wage, one which will reward them for undoubtedly hard and unpleasant work.

 

They have been rather caught out by this one, they must be energetically searching for the right channels in which to "deploy their influence" to ensure that their despicable enterprises can continue. No doubt that they will find them.

 

If the spread of the virus within their slave gangs continues, it is not too far fetched to suggest that bodies will start to be found at sea or washed up on beaches. A sick slave has no value, a sick slave who may infect other slaves must be disposed off...

" That reference was to migrant workers, not other foreigners trying to enter the country.

Probably as qualified as the unskilled labour currently employed, but the real issue is the slave labour wages paid by the building companies, pay decent wages and the Thai's might be encouraged to get off their a rse and do some work - - that's a maybe ????

On the construction sites they would need hell of a lot of Thai's to take over, it just isn't available not enough qualified tradesmen

A  friends Thai wife is a manager of a local 7/11 store.. I  asked her why so many 7/11 stores have so many employee's  in every store   ..she replied that  you can never be sure if  your staff will turn up for work everyday, so  you must employ double the amount of staff that you really need to be sure  that you have sufficient staff for every day that the shop is open..
