By convention a husband is expected to take a Thai wife to his home country to support her. If he wants to stay with her in Thailand he can easily obtain non immigrant visas to do so. If they have a family income of 40k baht per month they can easily extend those stays for one year at a time.

Just as entry to most countries to stay requires the meeting of financial conditions there are conditions to be met here. No country I know of allows unrestricted access.

thanks, i did NOT know that first line. Interesting. I fully understand regulations for income and self support (it interests me that apparently prior to 1998 you only needed 200k account in bank or 20k per month income. I doubt cost of living in Bkk has gone up 3 to 4 times. This is still MUCH more than most thais live on). If you marry a Phil woman, you get 13a perm resident status. Ecuador, panama and costa rica require something like $600 a month. Google Guyaquil pics sometime, looks inviting, temps are 70f to 86F on avg. I think there are reasons, I don't agree with one vocal poster they are anti mixed marraige or xenophobic. Concerning adoption, it's definately crossed my mind, I'm doing searches on that in a few minutes. Any idea if it's COMMON for a guy to get yearly non im extensions for long enough to carry out the marriage?

Getting married to a Thai Woman is a one -two day affair so why do you need a visa to get married. You can apply for any visa and come here to get married. It's a snap!

Section 7.17 para 5 of police order 606/2006 allows the parent over age 50 of a Thai child to live here without any financial requirements.

Now i am more confused than ever (unless i am reading an out of date document)

What you are saying is there in no financial requirements, if you are the parent of a Thai child.........right?

The OP is saying the same thing.......right?

Yet, according to Section 7.17 para 5 of the National Police Office Order No. 606/2006 (Sunbelt translation) the Required Documents section, para 5 it states the following requirements:

5. According to the Criterion No. 6, the applicant is required to attach the certificate of having the savings in the bank account of any bank in Thailand and copy of the bank account, or evidences of personal income of either party or both that shows the total income of both parties not less than 40,000 Baht per month, such as evidence of the personal income tax filing and the reciept, evidence of being a pensioner, credentials of recieving the interest of the saving money, or the evidences of having other income from other related organizations

Each criterion refer to completely different visa classes and applications. 5 refers to supporting Thai child I think! 6 refers to supporting Thai wife I think. Don't get the two confused because they are each different classes of visa extension.

In the case of someone marrying a woman that already has children, I believe there is a possiblity for you to formally adopt these children which would then mean they are your children and so if you are 50 or over you may be able to use this adoption as a basis for the 7.17(5) extension.

Just a suggestion!

Anyone shed any light on the above. Sunbelt ?

Reading the police order does seem to suggest that its possible but has anyone been successful after adopting and then obtaining a visa.

cheers

I think that if you are legally the parent of a Thai child through adoption, you are a parent of a Thai child! If you present a copy of the adoption papers or court order to immigration, I don't know that they have much choice but to respect them.

It may need one of Sunbelts ((edit tongue-in-cheek language to avoid any misunderstandings)) lawyers to ensure that you are dealt with in a correct manner under Thai law, but it should be OK.

On a number of occasions both on this forum and in real life, I know of situations where farang men have taken responsibility for Thai children that are not their own and have raised them as their own, eventually getting them the fathers nationality. I have total respect for Farang men that do this and know the chldren that have been adopted love their adopted father completely.
