Is the severity of the new strain any worse than the original?  Or is still only those with pre-existing conditions that are adversely affected?

It's easier to become infected, and is infecting younger people,

which the original strain did not seem to do,I thought I was

pretty safe here in Thailand, compared what is going on in the

West, but it was brought closer to home, when the hotel where

my daughter works had a guest that tested positive for covid 19.

They tested the staff and all were cleared ,but 2 that had contact

with the guest are in lock down at home for 14 days, I am 75 and

have conditions that would make catching Covid 19 definitely

life threatening, plus at the moment my wife has difficulty breathing

I think it's due to the weather, plus the smoke pollution just seems

to be starting ,the hills just visible this morning, not sure if mist  or

smoke, but it's coming......

regards worgeordie

the virus mutates in ANY person that is positive

I give it 7 more days before Brits are banned. It was madness letting them arrive in the first place.

UK should ban them traveling like Australia has its own citizens and we have the best numbers in the world. Gee wonder why?

more click bait crappe reporting, there are at least 2 more contagious variants floating around, 1 identified in the UK (because they have the best genome sequencing in the world) and 1 that has been identified in South Africa, so if you think that these actually originated in these countries then think again and if you think they haven't already arrived, or there aren't other variants around then you just have to face the fact that you are incapable of thinking at all. To clarify for you the South African identified variant is currently the most dangerous identified variant as it is highly contagious and is affecting younger people more harshly. The only route out of this mess is vaccination and instead of harping on about lockdowns, which only flatten the curve of infection, you should really be demanding a vaccination asap. After someone has done the proactive work to identify a particular strain it is very easy to run around spreading panic and saying "lordy me, look what i have found!" when your time could be better spent producing a solution ????

However, I just read up and found they are also used to isolate the pathogen and keep it from escaping from the room as well.

Until they ran out of negative pressure rooms this was the protocol for every infected person in Thailand.

Last month I read about someone who had been exposed to someone else who tested positive (a potential case) being isolated in a negative pressure room even though they hadn't tested positive, I guess they were practicing.

There's many mutant strains going around. The South African variant evolved in a population with an average age of 18 years, who does it infect - the young.

The one found in the UK infects everyone by the looks of it and is highly effective.

If you look at the infection charts going back a few months you can see that some countries had massive daily increases in infections long before the UK did. The new variant could have been going around since the summer.

My eye would be on France or Spain for the origin of this mutation, in time they will track it.

So it's okay to call this the "British mutated virus", but it wasn't okay to call COVID-19 the "Chinese virus" when first discovered in China?

correct

imagine if it had been first discovered in a black or muslim country, they'd probably say the word COVID is racist and have to rename it

so I guess now that this has made the news, these four British won't be allowed to mingle with the other people in quarantine

Sequenced and detected/discovered by UK scientists (basically I understand due to UK leading  the field in this research) the mutation  isn't home grown in the UK it's quiet endemic across many countries. And as the nature of viruses is to mutate, it's likely to appear notwithstanding any onwards transmission pursuant to its advanced nature.

The department of Disease Control to propose to not accept people arriving from the UK.

link is in Thai.

Why worry if it is called the UK variant. ?  Just fight it.

The UK should be isolated, this new strain that is so abundant over there should be stopped there. For once its a great thing that its an island.

Unfortunately this new variant has already "escaped" not only to Thailand but for reference (NY Times);-

The list of countries that have identified infections with the (UK) variant has been growing rapidly, and as of Friday includes — besides the United States, Britain and Turkey — Australia, Belgium, Brazil, Canada, Chile, China, Denmark, Finland, France, Germany, Iceland, India, Ireland, Israel, Italy, Japan, Jordan, Lebanon, Malta, the Netherlands, Norway, Pakistan, Portugal, Singapore, South Korea, Spain, Sweden, Switzerland and the United Arab Emirates, as well as Taiwan

and now Vietnam as I have just read on TVF.

They don't want to let the British mutant virus out into population,

its spreading like wildfire in UK, with 50,000 + cases per day.much

easier to be infected. what about the others on the flight they took ?

regards worgeordie

In theory, everyone else on the flight will be in quarantine and tested over the next 2 weeks

so if they're infected with any strain of the virus it should be picked up.

Always the fault of others with the English nationalists. Do not be surprised after you have become the laughing stock of the educated world, and the target of gibes.

This is the virus that originated in China , it doesnt matter where the Chinese virus mutated .

Does it matter where the person was standing, when the virus mutated ?

They need to immediately ban all flights from the UK and US.

We do not want that filthy mutated virus that is reported to be more contagious in Thailand.

Stay away from here!

BTW, who appointed you as the person who decides who is allowed entry or not?

Do you think that the family who were infected deliberately went out to get infected and then came to Thailand to spread it?

Remember that before they got on the plane they were tested during that 72 hour period, and must not have shown any symptoms or none of them would have been allowed to fly.

They went to an ASQ and were tested as positive there but how long were they in ASQ before testing?

They may even be asymptomatic and not even known that they were infectious.

At least they came openly and did not sneak in through porous borders as quite a few Thais and other nationalities have.

Yeah, rather as a shame out UK told about it at the earliest possible time rather than hid the disease like China for months hey ?

We do not know for sure it originated in China.

All we know is they had an outbreak and failed miserably to contain it.

According to this article it has been found in old sewer samples from 2019 in Spain, Italy and Brazil before the outbreak in China, so who knows where it came from? (maybe there has been more news after that article?)

I just hope the world learned it's lesson this time, and hopefully in the future no country will ever try and hide any outbreaks of any kinds.

Absolutely stunning.

Why haven't they banned all flights and passengers from the UK like most other countries?

I am afraid the chickens are out of the coop. I bet you with in the next couple of weeks it will be in every country.

Oh I understand - we have it here but if you break quarantine it's 6 months in jail and 750k fine.  In Thailand they pack these people on planes where it spreads and off they go if they're Thai.

It only takes one person to get it from quarantine outside and given its Thailand, the chances of it happening are extremely high.

I love how the Chinese objected to the virus being called Wuhan or China virus but now they are planting this trend to call new, more deadly strains by the Western places found.

They are playing gullible Westerners perfectly.

Why not call it either "the G strain" or go the other way and call it "the UK strain of the China virus"?

I understand your frustration, It is a very difficult situation and everyone is doing the best they can. I thought that Thais arriving in Thailand are quarantined also.

The only way it will be resolved is by immunization through an effective vaccine..

Herd immunity as it was first adopted in the UK  and  and other countries , mostly for economic reasons IMO, is what gave as the Mutations, every time a person is infected there is a chance of a mutation. the more people getting infected to achieve herd immunity, the higher the chance for mutations.

So here we are now. Stay safe and try to make it through the next months until you get your vaccine, and let's hope the vaccine is effective against the new strain.

I'm not afraid for myself, I am afraid for others.  I'm afraid for the people of Thailand who cannot afford these vaccines.  I'm afraid of the person who needs surgery and cannot get it there.  By and large, Thailand has seen literally nothing yet.  This may change.  And I worry about the security of the country if it does.

The numbers won't lie.

Again, I do hope that I'm wrong and would dance for joy if I am.

Take care.

Supermarkets full, and people shopping for Christmas.

Most people come on flights via Dubai, Qatar, via Frankfurt, via Istanbul. Stopping flights from UK only wont do it.
