1/10 years of good experience in Bangkok General with ID specialist (see him every 3 months).

2/But BGH dentist hospital once quoted me 40 000 (forty) thb for a procedure on 2 teeth which I declined and had a dentist in Belgium perform in a simpler way (no extraction, no jack) and for 170 EU (7820, seven thousand eight hundred twenty).

Recently I feel the big international hospitals have gotten more expensive, but overall cannot complain.

Had acute hyperventilation syndrome. was rushed ( in the slowest taxi with the oldest driver ever) to a government hospital in BKK. Spent 1 hr. in the emergency room. Was treated professionally and very well. After my medication, I was charged 100bht.

After a serious late night asthma attack we went to mission hospital (private) and was treat with the same level of professionalism, and was charged 600bht for emergency room treatment and oxygen. .... I really should give up the ciggys!

I've had both extremely good experiences, and extremely bad.

I'm not going to give pages of explanations, but I will add that my experiences have included being in intensive care in a Thai hospital and my children being in Thai hospitals for a range of minor to semi serious illnesses.

The lesson I take from my and my family's experience is that it is absolutely essential that you get a second opinion on every single procedure - Prefarebly by a specialist from another hospital.

I also think that if you find a doctor you trust and are happy with, stick with him and not the hospital, so if he moves, follow him for treatment.

So good, excellent and abysmal, buyer beware.

There is however one area of medical care that I think Thai hospitals completely fail on and that is the emotional care of patients and families dealing with serious illness.

I was medivact from Thailand to the UK. The care I had in Thailand was professional and not in anysense diffirent than what I would have had in the UK (it was of course expensive).

But the huge big difference was in all the non clinical care. Perhaps the most reputed hospital in Thailand came no where near to a provincial UK NHS hospital.

God bless the NHS.

Thai Government hospitals - excellent. Staffed by underpaid, dedicated hard working commited professionals.

Costs a fraction (literally a fraction) of the cost of private hospitals - and other than for the most complicated of procedures I wouldn't hesiatate to reccomend them. (even if it is complicated - just go to Chula on Silom - it has everything all the private hospitals have - and all the top Bangkok doctors that work at private hospitals also spend time at Chula).

1/ Almost killed myself on Doi Inthanon as a tourist. Local hospital stitched the deep wound well and charged me a low amount.

2/ Followup care at govt. hospital in Chiang Mai. Excellent, cheap.

3/ through 10/ Countless visits to clinic at govt. hospital in Chiang Mai - excellent care, cost 250 or 350 baht to see dermatologists, neurologists, orthopedists, heart specialist, eye surgeons, etc.

11/ Dog bite, Hua Hin - emergency care and rabies shots at Red Cross; excellent

12/ Infected shoulder, Hua Hin - private doctors were worthless

13/ Wax in ears, Hua Hin - nurse knew how to irrigate ear canal; fairly expensive

14/ I fell off motorcycle (dog's fault), Mae Taeng - local govt. hospital gave good emergency treatment and put me in ambulance to Chiang Mai - 1000 baht total, and I killed the dog.

15/ Surgery at CMai Ram hospital, prompt and profesisonal but infected and costly

16/ Samitivej - extremely qualified by Western standards; couldn't help me for months

17/ Govt. hospital in Chiang Mai again - successful surgery, good care, good price

18/ and 19/ - Annual physicals: good, about 2200 baht including lab tests.

20/ through 33/ - Pharmacies - generally excellent and cheap, with knowledgeable registered pharmacists, even some savy clerks.

As stated, some of the surgeons at the govt. hospitals are professors in the medical schools.

I have had a Spetoplasty and varicose veins dealt with in private hospitals, not at the same time I might add.

All very efficient.

When my son was involved in a motorcycle accident he was taken to the gov hospital.

They worried about CT scans but forgot basic first aid, to stop the bleeding.................

He almost bled to death.

Fortunately I stepped in and had him moved to the private hospital and within minutes he was in the theatre

where they repaired a torn artery on his scalp.

He had to wait a few days, to gather strength before a second op to repair his broken knee.

I am convinced he would have died if I had not had him transfered.
