Dozens arrested for alleged involvement in We Tour Together scheme scam

 

 

Over 60 people, including hoteliers, shop-owners and subscribers to the government’s “We Tour Together” tourism-promotion program, have been arrested by police in Chaiyaphum and Phuket provinces for alleged involvement in a scam to pocket ill-gotten gains from the scheme.

 

The arrests were the result of coordinated raids by police from the Bangkok-based Crime Suppression Division, following an extensive investigation ordered by Prime Minister Prayut Chan-o-cha, Pol Gen Suwat Chaengyodsuk told a news conference on Wednesday morning.

 

He said that the focus of the raids was the Natchaya Resort, in Thailand’s northeastern province of Chaiyaphum, which allegedly accepted fake hotel bookings from We Tour Together program subscribers, or through their brokers scattered across Chaiyaphum, Loei, Nakhon Ratchasima, Khon Kaen, Phetchabun and Si Sa Ket.

A country where seemingly everybody screws everybody as soon as the slightest opportunity arises, really has to take a serious look at its social fabric and moral values.

Many cases in the US of Covid relief funds being bilked. Most recently was in Las Vegas, where an enterprising gentleman rented out some offices, and said his insurance brokerage had been hit hard. The fact that there were brokers set up to channel fake bookings may go some way towards explaining why people were complaining that registration for the program was full a few minutes after if was opened. Perhaps the police should widen their investigation?

The scheme, "We Travel Together" has never been full, there is still over 400K nights available and each person that registers can have 10 nights so something like 40K registrations still available. There is also about 1.4 million airline ticket discounts still available under the scheme.

We used up our night allocation some time ago and have been hoping for another increase in the number of nights.

 

It was the third allocation in the 50/50 scheme that filled up very quickly. different schemes but both use the same app.
