Cashless payment on expressways starts today

Motorists got their first chance to try out contactless payment for Bangkok expressways on Friday, as the operator launched a trial at tollbooths.

Bangkok Expressway and Metro (BEM) has installed tap-and-scan points on the Si Rat-Outer Ring Road Expressway and the Udon Ratthaya Expressway (Bang Pa-in-Pak Kret).

Payment can be made with a Visa debit or credit card (PayWave enabled) or a Mastercard (Paypass enabled) from today onwards.

The procedure is simple and convenient: stop at the booth, lower the window and touch the card to WiFi-like symbol on the payment device.

They’ve had ‘cashless’ payment on the Expressways for years....   Its called the EasyPass !!!

Seriously - its a good move and should speed up the ‘pay line’...

It always amazes me how long the ‘green lanes’  are for those who pay cash instead of the ‘yellow lane’ EasyPass lanes.

The ‘pay lanes’ have been locations of delay for over a decade, why people wouldn’t recognise this and get an EasyPass is beyond me.

Why they don't have the common sense to have the correct money available in advance and stop near enough to the booth to hand it easily to the operator is what pisses me off.

What pi$$es me off are the drivers who pull up to the EasyPass lane then the penny drops... There was no queue in that lane because it’s EasyPass... the cars behind then have to reverse to let the guy out and into the ‘cash lane’.... Chaos !

It always seems to be a knackered pickup or small delivery truck of sorts !!...

That said: There are also quite a lot of instances of the ‘signal receiver’ itself not working... I have learned through experience that ‘some’ lanes at some expressway entrances / exits are more reliable than others.

I once pulled over to purchase an easy pass.

"Can't do, need to bring blue book"

OK, a few weeks later I pulled over again, this time with the blue book.

"Can't do, we are out of stock"

I still pay cash!

I like it on highway 7 when you easy pass doesn't work. Rather than open the gate, give u a card and tell you to pay at the other end, they back you out into high speed traffic causing huge jams and potential accidents. Morons.....

Driving back into central Bangkok on a late Sunday afternoon after a weekend at the beach they are brilliant !

Driving around the center I wouldn't be without it, so a good step re contactless - long overdue!
